Alright guys, I've got problems. Originally upon purchasing this vehicle, I believed this vehicle was equiped with the 4.10 rear end. Upon further inspection, I discovered that I actually have the 3.55. Now, here's the issue: at 70 mph I cruise at 2400 rpm, occasionally (rarely) the vehicle will go in to either lock up or fourth gear and I will do the proper 2000 rpm at 70 mph.
Now what I have done is replace the ect sensor since it was sluggish. Next I plan to replace the vss. My question to you is what could possibly cause the transmission not to shift into fourth gear? I believe a solenoid could be bad, but the truck does occassionally shift into fourth gear, but rarely. Is there anything else I should look at? Does anyone know where a good place to buy an e4od is? Any help is appreciated.
OD does work by the way, just no fourth gear. With OD on, I do 2400 RPM, with it off I do 2800-2900 rpm at 70mph.
Well, that's what I can't figure out. I know fourth gear is OD, but why is my RPM being inconsistent? The axle code is a 39, and the fact that twice it has done the 2krpm at 70mph verifies that is has to be the 3.55 gears. Im starting to think it's not locking up.
do you have a live data stream reader? Borrow a buddies edge evo tuner, and see what your tranny temps are if you dont already have a gauge. Even with the factory cooler, you should run about 185 to 195 unless the TC is screwed. after your driving down the road for a bit, in od without stopping, youll notice the temps start to climb.
Sounds like the TC is not locking properly. The rpm change is about 400 when it locks. Not sure what would cause this though. Take it to a tranny shop and have it scanned. Most will do it for free.
You might be able to tell if it's locking by counting the shifts. There should be 4. The TC always locks at the same speed (35-40MPH). It's very subtle but you can tell if it happened or not.
Another test is; when you are running along at a constant speed, level ground, above 50MPH or so, tap the brake pedal without moving the accelerator. You should feel the TC unlock, the tach should go up about 400 rpm and almost immedieately return to where it was.

This in my oh so humble opinion, haha, is invalid information. Tranny temps can come to the rise for a number of givin reasons. If the temps start to climb while in OD it dosnt neccesaryily mean that the TC is screwed. It could be from load, heat through the cooler, engine temps, etc., Hot summer days will always make tranny temps climb do to the fact the fluid cooler is seeing hot air and as we all know, hot air dosnt cool hot fluids, lol. Irregardless, many things can attribute to temp rises and if your in the 190* area I'd say your runnin norm. Good luck
Cowboy steve, please reread my post. Tranny temps without a HUGE cooler as I posted above SHOULD be between 185 to 195. Thats normal driving. If its more, your hosed. YOur tranny should NOT build that much heat empty. when I say EMPTY, I mean nothing out of the norm. Trust me on this one. If your in OD and you get excess heat, your do for a tranny visit. as far as ambient temps go, even if its 100 degrees outside, you might see 2 to 4 degrees on your tranny temp down the highway in od over norm IF EVERYTHING is working properly. If you see temps above 200 empty on flat ground, your hosed. but thanks for your opinions......This was merely a GUIDE for him. If its not shifting properly and it IS in lock and not slipping, there should NOT be that much heat. If it is not in lock you will notice heat build up. Well, she went all day yesterday she went just fine all day long. I'm not sure why either, I was towing 1k lbs lol...I'm gonna get the codes scanned today. Thanks for the input. I'm wondering if I might have a lazy tach, it seems to jump a lot. Something I should look into
Cruise works, all brake ligths work. She has been operating perfectly now, so I'm not sure what's going on. I added the tranny cooler and havent worked myself around to the gauge yet. I need to source a power, what did you guys use? Or should I just pull out the old multi-meter and find it?
