OK now I am thourghly confused, FORD DIESEL GLOW PLUG RELAY/CONTROLLER$31.00 or
glow plug relay controller for over $100.00. One looks like a starter solenoid and one is totally different. Its on top of the motor under a plastic case. Which one do I need???
Like Mac pointed out earlier, if your wait to start light isn't coming on that usually points towards the controller. The controller tells the relay when to turn on and for how long. When the relay activates it turns the GPs and the WTS light on.
Might be a good idea though to do some diagnosis before throwing money at it:
The controller is on top of the motor, back by the firewall. The relay is mounted on top of the controller, with a rectangular plastic cover over the whole works.
Go through glow plug thread at the top of this forum to troubleshoot.
Ok thats where i get confused. Both are the controller. I want the starter relay looking one that is in the glow plug thread that I have read twice. Why is there two different GPC relays? Who can I get the correct good quality one from? I dont want one that will fail after 5 starts.
On your system it mounts to the top of the GP Controller. Here is the relay on the controller:
This is a pic of under the hood of my truck, passenger inner fender. I have the old system:
You should have the starter relay on yours, yellow circle, you should not have the GP relay mounted on the fender like mine, red circle. Your relay is mounted to the top of the controller under that plastic guard on the rear of the engine behind the air cleaner.
As far as where to get it, Ford or IH would be best. Rockauto shows Airtex (run away from anything Airtex) or Delphi. (I have no experience with Delphi.)
Oreily's shows they can order the Motorcraft for $193:
