On the older system (your 84) I would agree, but the new system (his 90) is much more reliable. I prefer to keep things original when I can. Dieseldriver, a manual GP button is always an option though.
Where do you get gpc for 140, there alot more at napa
Red,
Rockauto baby! and that price is for the controller and the relay! Sure you have to pay shipping, but with the 5% discount code that my man Felix always provides us, (search rockauto 5% discount in this forum or on google) it is about a wash.
How much was the radiator? I put Champion aluminum radiators in both my trucks. 220 bucks shipped to my door. The quality seems good, but I ditched the provided caps for 13 lb stants.
I like to keep things original too, but this is one modification I don't hesitate on. I've had plenty of headaches with the new system too, I don't care for either.
Only thing I don't like about the button is on the rare occasion I have someone else do work on my truck, I hate the thought of the dummys in the shop killing my batteries and/or glow plugs because starting it might be too complex for them.
Here's a kit for the manual upgrade if you don't like DIY:
I made my own system like that once, useing just a regular starter relay, But it somked all brand new glow plugs the first time. That pissed me off I and I went back to starting fluid for a year.
Then I just bought a new controler and haven't had any troubble yet.
I've done the button upgrade many times using the factory relay. There is no way it can smoke the glow plugs if wired properly. Assuming of course you're not holding the button in too long.
Does anyone know where I can be sure to get the right one? Without the I and S and breakerless or whatever they said in the newbie postings. The heavy duty style not the $19.95 cheapies.
I counted to 15, that souldn't have done it. The bobcat you have to hold them on for about a mintue. They were also autolite pluge wich would only last a year of reugaler use.
Dose any one know were you can get 12v glow plugs that work on an idi
OK now I am thourghly confused, FORD DIESEL GLOW PLUG RELAY/CONTROLLER$31.00 or
glow plug relay controller for over $100.00. One looks like a starter solenoid and one is totally different. Its on top of the motor under a plastic case. Which one do I need???

I would think that 15 seconds on a cold morning would be fine, no?? Curious though because I just bought a 1992 that had a push button on it. Don't really want to burn up the new plugs.
Nope. I believe that's a trait of the Powerstrokes, but not us. I recommend a 6-pt deep socket (I forget which size), a u-joint adapter, a 3" extension, and the appropriate wrench. I recommend 1/4" drive so as not to overdo it.
Mike
You can use either a 10mm or a 3/8" deep socket. Use the 1/4 drive socket with a universal joint adapter at the top of socket with a T handle screwdriver. Worked AWESOME for me.
Whiteboyslo's way would work as well. I don't have much use for a 1/4 wrench so I bought the much cheaper T handle screwdriver instead.
