On my drive home today my truck began to act up, the trans would disengage and make a clunk and the red light on the top of the dash would come on, I let off the throttle for a few seconds and coasted till the light went off and it drove fine for another mile or so until the same thing happened again. No check engine light as of now.
On a possibly related note there has been a knocking noise coming from the back of the motor or the front of the trans, it has been suspected that the flex plate is cracked causing this knock.
To follow up my truck is at a trans shop now, the stored codes are:
B1602 PATS Recieved Invalid FMT/Key CD
P0753 Shift Solenoid A Electrical
P0758 Shift Solenoid B Electrical
P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Fault
P1760 Pressure Control Solenoid A Short
p0305 Cylinder 5 misfire Detected
P0316 Engine misfire Detected on Startup
The supposed "cracked flex plate" is a bad Cat, so that is out of the way. The misfire codes I am not to concerned with as it I am sure it is the coil or plugs... unless it has any relation to the trans codes. I dont know if it a coincidence that all these codes came up within 5 miles, and it ran and shifted perfect before that.
Is there a wire harness that could be damaged that could cause this many codes at once?
Also I had originally assumed that the red light on the dash was just for the vehicle alarm system, but when the trans came out of gear the light would come on, and as soon as it locked back up the light went out, and at that time there was no CEL, I went back the next morning to try to duplicate the problem with a scanner connected and that is when the CEL came on with a misfire code.
Well my transmission guy just notified me that the trans was 2.5 qts low on fluid. I swear I checked it when I bought it but I must have been in a hurry or completely misread the dipstick, I feel pretty dumb because I give people a hard time when they break something because of low fluid.
I will tackle the cat and the misfire and hopefully get rid of all these codes.
Update, I picked the truck up from the trans shop today and drove about 20 miles and the exact same problem came back, I have noticed now on my scanner that when the trans stops pulling that the head lights dim and the voltage drops down to 12 volts and as soon as it rises back to 14 volts the trans starts pulling again.
I found a stripped bolt on the starter where the main ground connects so I replaced the bolt, I also cleaned the battery terminal connections and checked all the grounds that I could find until I got tired and came inside.
I wonder if it is just the fact that this trans can not pull with more than 12 volts and this could just be an electrical issue. And is there any grounds or connectors that are known for going bad?
PS I fixed the #5 cyl misfire by clearing the water from the around the spark plug and installing a spare coil pack that I had.
Hopefully the last update here, I went back and forth testing harnesses and connectors to no avail, until I found a used pcm for $100, so I figured I would give it a shot. I had a friend come over with the IDS to program the new pcm to the truck, after programming the new pcm the truck ran just as bad the old pcm. At that point he downloaded the latest software to the new pcm and it has been running perfect ever since.
So my conclusion for this problem is that if no problem can be identified with the wire harness and connectors then next have ford download the latest software
