Blinking O/D Light

New to FTE so go easy. I bought a used 1998 F150 4X4 with a 4.6 V8 Automatic. The vehicle has 75000 miles on it and runs relatively good. On the trucks maiden voyage I got up to about 70Mph and the O/D Off light started to blink. Later that day while driving home under the same conditons the light was not blinking and has not blinked since (have not driven above 40Mph though). The truck seems to shift ok through all the gears but is slightly hestiant going into first. Any suggestions as to the best way to proceed. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

get it scanned for codes right away. my 98 with 69,000 miles started doing the same thing, ended up having a very expensive problem involving clutch kit, torgue converter, bunch of stuff. i took my to auto zone and nothing showed up when they scanned it but when i took it to the transmission they were able to pull the codes and fix it

It is an indication that the transmission threw a code. It may not be an expensive thing to repair. I had it and a new accumulator (?) seal and solenoid fixed it. I'd take it to the stealership and at least two trans shops. Be careful you aren't ripped off. Mine was done by a friend who worked on Ford in the past. I am pretty sure a trans shop or stealership may have sold me a new transmission instead.

that is always a possiblility. the transmission shop that i go to has always worked on my trucks, the owner and the mechanic are both good friends of mine. they showed me what was wrong with mine, and i told them to fix it. but i would go and get the codes read just incase. with the problem that you described i would go and make sure that it is nothing serious. most transmission shops will do the test for free around here, same as auto part stores.

geoaigel - good point, i just have had bad transmission problems due to that i use to never get it checked on time.

Good points thanks guys. I just cant see it being something major right now because the truck runs so solid. On the other hand if I can spend 100.00 now and save 1500.00 later thats a no brainer.

I had this problem. Took it to a tranny shop. They reset it. Never happended since. They said that sometimes the tranny gets its panties in a wad. Freaks out. Don't make me fell reassured much. But 7 months later, no problems.
