So I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction with my dilemma? I have a 96 f150, 5.0, auto trans, Twice in the past week I have been cruising down the street in OD and I would let me foot of the gas and get back on and my trans will downshift and the check engine light comes on and I lose power. This only lasts for about 5 seconds and right as the light goes away the truck is back to normal. I'm planning on getting codes read but I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on where to start first? I also replaced the TPS last week but I'm not sure if that would change anything because this feels like a trans problem. But any help would be appreciated.
Thank you, Dave
Who read your codes, AutoZone?
I think their scanner can read pending codes as well as active.
Either way, you should have active fault codes by now...
If there really ain't any codes set, then I'd think maybe you got an intermittent open circuit somewhere. Just something to consider at this point, not a diagnosis.
Does the truck cut out completely when this happens, like turning off the ignition switch?
the check engine light is not on. It only appears when the incident happens. Autozone checked it and it found no codes unless they did it wrong. The truck does not shut off it just doesn't respond to throttle just slows down.
Last time I had a check engine light on I popped the hood and made sure it was still there! It was... Problem solved... LOL
Do you know how to check OBD 1 codes? Or is it obd2 style? Usually OBD 2 codes will stick around in Pending faults. I dont think all scanners pick up pending faults.
I wasn't banking on autozone giving me a quality code scan lol ill have to try elsewhere and see what I get
OBD 1 you can check yourself using a wire or a couple of screw drivers. Under the hood on the drivers side fender wall there is a connector Test port something. and my jumping the wires it will give you codes.
I personally Bought a Bluetooth adapter that i can use in conjection with my smart phone. Give me Live data and stored pending faults... Only 27 dollars on ebay.

Yup, and then pulled the bulb for good measure lol.
That light is useless to me, it's on for the inop EGR so if anything else went wrong it wouldn't be able to tell me anyway.
That's strange that the light don't stay on though. Every OBDII system I've had, once the light was on it was there to stay until cleared. Think it's also supposed to clear itself after like 80 ignition cycles without detecting a fault, but I never waited that long.
OBDI systems have that annoying on/off/on/off thing going... it might have a code set but the light's only on when it sees the problem, then it's out the next time you start until it sees the problem again. I thought all 96 half-tons were OBDII but I could be wrong.
OP, if you have OBDI then ignore my post above (post #5).
my test port where you plug in the reader is in the cab under the dash and most people are saying its OBII so im assuming that's what it is but I am still confused about my problem. The trans shifts smooth and has no poor characteristics except when this incident happens which leads me to believe its some sort of sensor. does anyone know of a faulty sensor that could cause this?

Just about any of the sensors can cause the transmission to go into limp mode.
I seem to recall the power for the Diagnostic Data Link comes from the same fuse as the lighter, Fuse 16. If that is blown you will not be able to pull any codes with the reader. Very common problem....
