I'm getting ready to pull my head and gearing up with parts and know how. I've not pulled since studs were used. Has anyone done it? Is anything special needed?
From what I've heard, you want to break the torque on each bolt in reverse order that you torque it. Not just start at one end and loosen to the other.
I've lifted mine out of the bay a few times. Darn heavy. But not NEARLY as hard as trying to put it back ON the engine while leaning over the fender.
I changed from head bolts to ARP studs. The bolts were 37 years old. I thought they were most likely fatigued/stretched, so I went with studs. When I removed the head the first time, witness marked make it look like the gasket was getting close to failing between cylinders, and I thought that might either be caused by old head bolts or a cheap gasket. This time around I'm going with the HP Fel-pro gasket, at $47.00. I don't like to take chances.
Since I had not removed a head attached with studs, I wasn't certain if it would like removing one with bolts.
