I have a 96 explorer (Eddie Bower Edition) with automatic trans ( not sure which one at this moment) after reading several treads I still am not sure what is wrong or what to check
Today getting on the freeway as I was getting up to speed I heard what sounded like a click then no longer had any forward gears. After rolling to a stop I tried every gear and nothing I did fell like it wanted to go but it would not move. The trans fluid did not smell burnt and at most I might have been maybe 1/2 quart low.
Somebody please tell me where to start and what to check
OK here is an update, after reading many threads, and talking to a number of people about trans and transfer cases. I changed the valve body gaskets and the neutral safety switch( it has many names) and I still have nothing, no forward or reverse movement. So I think the trans is bad so I get another one from pick n pull get it in and I still have the same problem. SO now I am thinking it is the transfer case, I took the electric shift motor ( shift from 2 to 4) off and it work like it is suppose to, I then manually shifted the transfer case and I still have nothing. At this point I don't know if I need to take my transfer case apart and see if something is wrong inside of it or start looking at something else. is there a computer that controls the trans ???
I'd need to check the exploded view diagram of the transfer case, but isn't the rear output shaft basically a straight shaft tied directly to the transmission output shaft, versus either a hydraulic or electrically coupled output? So, in other words, if the transmission is spinning the output shaft, the rear driveshaft should be rotating as well?
If you jack up and support all four corners of the truck so the tires are not touching the ground, then manually engage 4WD, can you get the front wheels to rotate by rotating the rear axle?
have you had it scan for any codes. I wonder if its a computer issue. I have and 01 and it did the same thing and it was the gem module. I would think to have it scanned I think a local auto parts sales shop like autozone or o riley or checkers can try to scan it for you at no cost..
A standard, consumer-grade scan tool like what the auto parts stores use cannot access the GEM module. That requires a professional-grade scan tool. While it would be free to have them try, you won't be able to determine that no codes are set for the GEM if their scan comes back empty.

It is up on jack stands now and both shafts turn when I turn the tires when in 4 wheel drive

I went to the local pick and pull to get a used gem just to see if there is a difference but they were all gone, somebody had taken them all for that vintage. I don't want to but a brand new one at this moment just in case it is not the gem module.

shorod I believe you completely, plus my battery was disconnected for about about a week while I was trading the transmission so I don't think there would be any code in it now anyways
shorod if I took out my gem module can the ford dealer check it to see if it is good or not or is it one of those thing where you just have to take your chances ??
Many Many thanks for what info I have received form you guys
