Just got the engine running good in my truck after having carb probs.Got in it today and drove in the backyard and got hung up.Put the manual trans in neutral,Locked in the new front hubs,Well long story short,After digging a swimming pool in my backyard with the rear tires,I didn`t make it very far.The front end never locked in.Long story short again,We put jack stands under the front and rear of the truck where the tires were off the ground.Started the truck and put it in 4 high/4 low,Put trans in first gear. The driveshaft from the tranfer case is turning going to the front end.But when i grabbed one of the front axles going to the wheel,It quit turning. So i had one buddy tell me to take the outer part of the manual lock out off to see if the axle was turning on the inside of the lock out,It was,Pushed in the lock out to grab the axle and it quit turning!!!!!.My wifes father came over tonight and had a look at the truck and he told me that he thinks the spider gear in the front end is busted,Does this sound right Or do you all think it`s somthing else?????
If the gears in the front diff are shot then you could not have stopped the front drive shaft ... Sounds more like a shot transfer case ... Or something as simple as a loose shifet linkage ... But if your front drive line can be stopped by hand something in the transfer case is wrong ... If you can, try putting it in 4high and going a set speed and note the rpms ... Then shift into low range and match the rpms ... You should be going slower ... If you are going the same speed then you are not engaging the transfer case ...
I wonder if you can do the same test by jacking all 4 tires off the ground at the same time? ... Might put less strain on drivetrain ...
I could not stop the front drive shaft coming from the transfer case. The truck was completely off the ground with 4 jack stands under it.The drive shaft coming from the transfer case is turning fine.It is the front axles going to the wheels that stop!!!It is still on the jack stands in the garage..Put it in 4 high today and the drive shaft from the transfer case was going faster than when i put it in four low!!!It is engaging as far as the tranfer case goes..It`s just not making it to the front wheels!!!I had a buddy today hold one axle on the truck while i held the other one...The front axles completely stop turning but the driveshaft coming from the transfer case is still turning perfect.....
Front diff is not functioning properly ... Time to pull the cover off and take a looksy ... Make sure you put something under it before you remove the cover to catch any parts and pieces that might fall out ...

Problem is, these twin-i-beam front 4wd systems don't have a cover. You have to drop the whole chunk out of the axle beam. So that means taking all the stuff apart at the wheels and pulling the axles, and then it will come out.
Make sure you have some money for parts before you do this. You can drive it in 2wd till you save up. The reason I say this, is you are going in this far, you don't want to do this again, so you may find some worn u-joints, balljoints, seals, etc. Then you can put it all back together and not worry about it.
ive been having the same problem with mine, went threw 2 sets of hubs,so i tore out the whole front end just to see, spiders and all well contained, although ur problem and mine may differ just thought id let u know before u tear it out ,check ur other options first
if you pull the hubs is it possible to visualize the axles? ... If so then you might try that first, before tearing the whole thing apart ... Just in case it is the hubs ...
K ... Not being known for my mechanical abilities I was just trying to think of the least expensive and least extensive way to find what is the problem ...
