I am going to replace the upper control arms this weekend. I noticed that there are regular bolts with no cam washer installed. I have read conflicting info on whether the cam washer set up is needed. Do I have to install these or can I just put the old bolts back in just like they are. When I replaced the uppers on my 1997 T-Bird I put in new bolts but there was no mention of a cam washer setup for it anywhere that I saw. What would be the problems if I just reinstalled the old bolts. Right now the truck drives straight as an arrow but the lower ball joint on the driver side is shot so I will be replacing it also.
Yes you can do it with out the cams. I wire brush the area prior to removal. I use a ***** punch and put 3-4 marks on the frame at the edge of the washer. You could also spray paint it white and wait a few hours to dry. Remove the bolt, replace the arm and put it back in the same spot. Mine has 250k miles, been done twice at home, and still no cams. You can even do your own alignment with a level - straight edge and ruler if you know the basics.

x2! Sharpie works as well. I went with the cam bolts/washers. An extra $20 per side, but now I don't have to worry about it. I didn't even need an alignment after replacing the uppers. When I had it checked they were in range.
