Time to upgrade to a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. the f150 just dont do it. I have not owned a big boy truck before and would like to stay under 25000$ and own a diesel. I will be puting 10 to 15000 miles on a year and hualing a trailer with a weight of 10000 full. I was told to stay away from the 6.0 ford, by a doge owner but would like to stay with ford. Please help with any recommendations, I would like to get a diesel for the mileage and torque and as you all know Ford rules !
since your driving arcoss state lines and i assume a commercial business? you should get a SRW F350. The 6.0 has a bad rap but there are plenty out there that never had a problem. if you go to the 6.0 section them guys will tell you exactly what to look for to make sure you wont buy a lemon 6.0. Also buy a 100 dollar scan gauge when you take a test drive and look for no more than a 10* difference between the oil and water temp. if its more then one of the coolers is plugged or there could be more problems. And if when you buy one go here and buy some "upgrades"
Ive been thinking of selling my 2004 F350 and looking for a 06 or 07 F350 with the 6.0 and 6speed manual. Ive only found one but it looked like it was a oil field truck, completely covered in dirt mud etc
What is the intended use, diesels do not make good grocery getters or weekend haulers. There are great deals on 6.0's that need a little work but for 4-5,000 you can have a very reliable motor!
Thanks for the help!.. I will be useing it for work moving livestock equipnemt ect. The 6.0 in a 350 is were i will start. The scantool is a great idea and the guyes on the 6.0 sight rule. It looks like a few mods will be needed, cooler, filters, egr, ect. So what year and mods do you think will be best? I would like to keep it for the next 5 years so how many miles is to much and what options do i need? The truck will a work truck and not babied.. p.s. I can do most engine mods , but is it worth it to take it and have a pro do it ??
As far as fords go. The 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4 would work. The 7.3 is reliable but is scarce to find a nice truck for a decent price. The 6.0 has a bad rep but can be a very good deal. I've had 2 and both have been good trucks. You could likely find a 06-07 depending on trim and miles that would be in the $10-18k save the rest of your budget for upgrades. If you look at the 6.4 they are going to be fairly expensive still because they still fairly new. The biggest draw back to the 6.4 is the cost if things go bad. They cost a lot more to fix. As a general thing the 7.3 has less problems and practically no emissions. The 6.0 has emission and more problems related to that. When properly addressed they are great trucks. The 6.4 has even more emission and more costly problems. They can make huge power but are expensive to fix and have poor fuel economy with out tuning.

Yup, my 6.4 has a life time average of 11.5 mpg's over 77K miles..but I tow constantly.
I would not be to scared of the 6.0. Just read up on the engine in the 6.0 forum to address common issues and how to properly maintain it. However do be prepared for high cost of parts and maintenance versus a gas engine that you had in the F150. If that scares you look for a 3V V10. 10-15K a year is not many miles a year even if it's all towing.
Wow , thanks, I have some learning to do. It looks like a great puller if the proper upgrades are done. A gas v10 may do the job but will it give me the life of a diesel ?
I think that with a few bucks a 6.0 can be made bullet proof, stump pulling long hauller.
A egr, oil cooler, and head gasket fix are the big 3. It looks like a 04 to 07 with under 60000.is the way to start. Time to look and learn, then buy a good truck.
Before you commit yourself to a diesel, study up on the towing capacity of the various Super Duty trucks. A 2005-2010 V-10 will easily tow 10,000 pounds. Engine life is not an issue, these engines will easily last 1 million miles with normal maintenance. No, you probably won't get stellar fuel mileage, but your costs will more than be made up in lower fuel costs, lower maintenance bills, lower initial vehicle purchase price and better reliability.
Shoot, even an 05-10 5.4L V-8 with the 4.10 differential gearing is rated to tow over 10,000 pounds.
By the way, the 05-10 V-10 and V-8 trucks have no serious reliability issues. Good engines, great transmissions. The only issue is that they came from the factory with spark plugs that tend to break when removed. A change to the new style spark plugs resolves that issue.
I am not saying do not get a diesel truck, I am just saying you need to go to the 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Power Stroke engine forums and read up on what those owners are experiencing.
As a rancher in TX, i have three main work trucks. one is a 2006 F-250 V10 with approx 130K still runs great will tow anything i need it to tow, regular oil changes and normal service and only problem was the steering stabilizer went out but easy fix. Next unit is a 2009 F-250 V10 and it has approx 85K on it and also still running great with no problems at all. and my main vehicle is a 2008 F-250 6.4L with 135K on it. It runs great also never had a towing problem. Had just 2 minor issues and with proper service and fixes i expect this vehicle to last for many more miles.
So my point is dont overlook the gas engines from Ford they are very reliable, the V10 is made to tow heavy loads and run hard just like the diesel just usually with a lower cost of ownership. Both of my V10's average about 10-11 mpg and thats on 86 grade gas and usualy towing. The V10 is a better daily driver if you are looking for short trips and then occasional towing IMO. But also nothing wrong with them for towing long trips at all.

That Dodge guy heard stories from the early 6.0's(03-04).
To Lubbock's point, find an 06 or 07 and just ensure maintenance record is good.
Lot's of differences from the early models.
