I recently acquired a 1998 f-150 v8 4.6L. It has been sitting for two years. I have replaced:
-spark plugs& wires
-battery & terminals
-fuel filter
-oil and oil filter
I can't get it to start at this point. On a scale of 1-5 of knowing a lot about vehicles I would definitely give myself a generous 1. That being said, any recommendations on what my next steps should be to get this thing firing are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Basics say to confirm if you have spark & fuel, but in the case of "sitting for two years" I'd want to know why it sat? Modernity says hook up OBD2 code reader & check for fault codes. Could be all kinds of things, including whatever retired it in the 1st place to old/bad ethanol gas.
Pull a spark plug wire, stick an extra spark plug in it, lay it on good ground, have someone turn motor over & check for spark. No spark you know ignition is fritzed.
If ignition is fritzed pull spark plug & check to see if it's wet with gas. If spark plug is dry after motor is turned over it's not getting gas.
If you have spark & gas, but no start, its time to suspect timing issue.
Yes only a little indeed. The reason it sat is just because it was a high school truck, and after I left for school it went in the backyard and hasn't been touched since.
Number 4? Sounds like water getting in the hole....hose up above, cowl seal, squirter above....problematic area. Does it have fresh gas in it? As mentioned check for spark and fuel. It should run if it ran when parked. Gas is not very forgiving these days mixed with corn juice.
Since when "should it run if it ran when parked" two years ago? Ethanol gas can go bad in as little as 6 months.

However sitting "two years" opens up Cans of Worms, like critters chewing stuff & building nests in inconvenient places, to corrosion developing in critical places.

That's why I stated "fresh gas, spark and fuel" It would normally at least fire with those parameters.
If it has spark, i would consider sucking out all the gas, then adding 5-6 gallons of new. Take a fitting off of the rail and turn the key on several times to pump old gas out of the line and new gas up to the motor. Then try to start.
Okay, good news. Truck runs smooth as milk. Thanks for the help guys. Now for my next problem. My front end is a mess. Whenever I get above 20-30 mph my wheels wobble, terribly. I saw some posts on here about a "death wobble"? Is this my problem? If it is, how do I solve this?
Front end, front wheels. Yes, the steering wheel is nice and smooth until that 20 mph+ range then it starts to shake pretty bad. I don't think it's just a steering issue because when I put new tires on, the inside tread of the tires started to go bald, but the outside tread was untouched.
