I have a 1964 f-100 262 straight 6 4 on the floor. I was wondering how difficult it would be to switch it out with a 460 and what I would all have to do. Would I need a new axle? What year would you recommend for the 460 I prefer going with a manual but if I need to ill put an automatic. Have any of you done this?
I would think at the very least you'll need motor stands, motor mounts,a trans mount(or re arrange yours)and I wouldn't even think of such a thing unless I had all the parts especially the bell housing. That might prove to be hard to find. Not to mention a big radiator to cool that sucker! And,unless you want a stump puller I'd look for gears in the high2's or low 3's.Just my opinion.
You can take everthing from the 70's 80's truck, but you'll still need to do some fabricating, your 64 frame is totally different. Speedway has mounts that you can bolt or weld in, might check there.
I might be a bit late to the party, but I have plans to do the same thing with my truck. I prefer the auto over the manual tranny in this case.
460 will require:
Motor mounts/stands from a truck 79 or older. Think mid 70s here. Your current tranny cross member will probably be just fine. May need to move. Your axle will be fine, but you will need to get your drive shaft shortened. Manual trans will require some fab work to get the linkage right for the clutch. Honestly, Id look for a tranny out of a new truck, than an old one as the 5 speed will offer alot more flexibility than a 4 speed.
Thats the start of it. Im sure other wiser folks will chime in with their thoughts, especially if I screwed something up.
If you want to make it perfect you will have to get the part of the floor that covers the transmission out of a truck with an auto trans in it. If memory serves the manual 4 on the floor trans had a higher hump in the floor, which may not be a bad thing as the C6 is a big tranny. Myself, Id weld a piece in the hole and call it good. With carpet over the top and the tranny blocking view from below, youll be the only one that knows what you did in the end.
