I want to get a good tuner for mpg but I don't have my pistons heads studed I'm a lil worried tho if I get the tuner that ill blow a piston or something
so the Street Race Lite (SRL) tunner is for like an everyday driver but you cant tow anything whit it cuz i have a 5th wheel camper and its about 9,000lbs.WHY is that? and can you turn it off when ever you want cuz my friend has a tuner thats has a twist knobe under his steering wheel and he can turn it to like racceing ,fuel econ, toweing, and stock.
Find or get a SCT tuner. Each of the major people who write tunes have tunes for non-studded trucks. And they all have tow tunes. Which deal a lot with shift points for towing.
Shift on the fly tunes have issues with transmissions. At least that is what I have read here and on other forums.
I found an unlocked used SCT X2 for $175 on Craig's list.
It's not recommended to tow with certain higher power tunes because very generally, more fuel means more heat and more boost means higher cylinder pressures, and you're more likely to do something like slag the turbo, melt a piston, or blow the heads using a tune while towing. Not that people don't tow with bigger injectors, larger turbo, etc, but they've done more than just stick a tune into the computer and mashed the pedal. Part of the reason the 6.0L has a bad reputation is because early on people would "chip it" like they would a 7.3L, and end up blowing the heads or something similar.
The SCT Xcal 3 tuner has slots for three tunes, if you buy from Gearheads you'll get the SRL for general driving, an 8k tow tune and an unlimited tow tune. So when you want to tow your RV, plug the tuner back in and switch it over to the unlimited tow tune, which will return the engine to stock power levels but will keep the transmission tuning in place.

Tunes are all written for different circumstances. A performance tune will act a lot different than a towing tune. The fueling, shifting, etc. are setup differently to do different things.
You do not want to tow in a performance tune because the performance tune was written to work safely with an unloaded truck. When you put a load on it, you will be overworking the engine and you will see higher EGT's among other things.
If you are interested in a programmer and some tunes, we can get you setup. Jody(our tuner) has been tuning 6.0L engines since 2005 and has a great understanding of what is needed to make the engine perform at it's peak performance.
