Has anyone found a smoking gun on this one? I'm having the same issue on my '14. A couple of weeks ago it started occasionally not cranking on the first turn of the key, second time it fired up. Then it stopped and it was normal for the last week. Today the temp dropped to 17 and it wouldn't crank. I took the battery in and it tests fine. I hear one faint click somewhere when it won't crank. Once it cranks it does so strong and normal.
I'm thinking the best thing to do, for starters, is go connection by connection to the solenoid and clean everything up. Including the Solenoid ground.
Just bumping this one back up to see if anyone has found anything in particular to look for for this issue. My '10 F150 started doing this exact thing a few days ago. So far, opening the hood and jiggling the battery cables and lightly smacking the relay/fuse box on top of the radiator support has gotten it to start. Next chance I get, I'll pull it into the garage and start cleaning and checking electrical connections.
A remote possibility- the type of battery you have may be a contributing factor. Lots of motorcycle riders "up yonder" chose a lithium replacement for lighter weight only to find they don't work well when cold. Some start flaking out as warm as 40*F but the colder it gets the worse it is. And strangely, the results are very similar to what I read here. The bikers have a failed start at first then a good start the second. They found the battery sort of has to heat up internally by having a large load on it for a moment- like a starter- then after a 15-30 second "rest" it works fine.
Like I said a remote possibility but check what you got. Lithium and related-type batteries just like warmer climates.

I haven't found anything yet. I had mine into the Ford dealership last winter. They checked the cables to the starter and wiring and said all checked out good. They sent me home and told me to watch when it does it again and to let them know if the P for park is lit up or not. I have never had a problem with the truck not being in park. I think the guy thought I must have been an idiot. My truck has not done it this winter yet therefore I've never had a reason to take it back in yet. Thought it would do it on Christmas day because we did some travelling and it was about - 27C. I went out to start it, was even videoing with my phone and low and behold the damn thing fired right up.
