2012 EB won't start when cold

Just got my new work truck a '12 EB. This morning it was about 9 degrees and I jumped in and turned the key. The dash screen went out and the radio display went out then cycled back on but the starter didn't crank. I tried 2 more times with the same result. Then I just let the key in the on position for about 10 seconds and then I turned the key and it started right up. I stopped at several places and every time I went to start it it cranked and fired up the first try. Now tonight the truck has been sitting for 7 hours and it is 12 degrees, it took several tries before it cranked.

Of course it is under warranty and can have the dealer come pick it up Monday but I thought I would ask here first if anyone has ran into this. I am not even sure it is connected to the cold but it seems to be.

a little old school thought here, but sounds like something in between the key and starter isnt making contact.

My truck hesitated to crank today. I think I accidently hit the door unlock button on the key fob at the same time I turned the key to crank position. It did crank shortly after.

Here it's been in the high teens in the mornings and I've had no issues. As stated above, I'd suggest a bad connection.

well just start at the source and move your way down. Pull the battery connections off and make sure they are clean, reinstall them and make sure they are on there tight.

At what temps should one start looking into block heaters? What are the CCA's of the batteries they install in the F150's?

shouldnt be different than any other gas engine. Lol, ever since ford put a turbo in the mix people magically think this motor transformed into a compression ignition diesel.

If your door or doors weren't shut all the way, there is a timer that will cut power off (I had one on my SD and one on my 08 F150) to keep the battery from dying and when you put the key in for the first time, you think you have a dead battery as it won't crank. After cycling the key a time or two it will start. Does that sound like what may have happened?

No when I turn the key to ON the Ford animation on the display in the instrument panel starts, the fuel gauge comes up, the radio display comes on, everything looks normal. Then when I turn the key to START, nothing. Its kind of like if the engine is already running it just does nothing when you turn the key to start (on some newer vehicles, not sure if this truck does that or not, never tried). If you keep holding the key in the START position after about 4-5 seconds everything on the dash will turn off and start back up again.

It is definitely something electronic. Just thought I would check and see if anyone else had experienced this. It is entirely possible a wire or something didn't get tightened at the factory or there is a defective sensor or solenoid somewhere. Sounds like it is an isolated incident so I will just have the dealer check it out.

Well hate to hear it, with all these new trucks going through electronics hell......I would drop it off at the dealer. Wouldn't hurt to start familiarizing yourself with the lemon law if ya know what I mean.

Usually about 0 degrees F and below is when you would need a block heater. I dont plug mine in until it hits 10 below and anything below 20 below is usually a must.

I live in Sudbury, Ontario and I never plug in my ecoboost. I have never been stranded... It starts like a charm every time. Two weeks ago we had a cold snap one morning it was
- 34 Celsius (darn cold). Started with the factory remote start no problem. I think there might be something else wrong with that truck maybe load test that battery. It might be a bad battery

my '05 acted like that right out after I bought it and it turned out to be a bad solenoid in the starter. After sitting all night it would take a few tries for the starter to crank, then it would be fine the rest of the day.

We have experienced consistent -20(-4F) ish weather with -35(-31F) windchills in the last 2 weeks and my 5.0 has never missed a beat and I have never used the block heater, could'nt be happier.

Just sounds like a cable or connection problem between the batt and the starter/solenoid -- possibly the ground connection on the starter.

If it was the batt itself, your lights would dim

Doesn't take much of an issue as the temps drop. When you try it, it might be heating up and 'fixing' itself a little.

Of course with all of the stuff on trucks today, it could be a 'feature' that's doing something that you don't expect.

just my .02
