If it's never been like that before and just started without any other work being done in the area it's probably the bolts have come loose at the end of the column shift tube. That piece has the shift cable attached to it.

????dont know i just got this truck mon & have no history what so ever it has several little things wrong with it,going to tackle them one at a time
thx noel
Crawl under the dash right under the steering wheel. Look at the firewall and you will see a black cable coming into the cab from the engine compartment. Follow that up and you will see where it hooks to a plate via a ball and stud. Look at the 2 gold colored screws that hold that plate to the shifter rod. Make sure they are tight. If that is OK look further up in that area and look for a little plastic nylon wheel...maybe the size of a quarter. Set the parking brake or block the wheels so it will not role away...put truck in neutral. Now turn that little wheel one way or another and it will move the pointer and you can center it on the "N".....good luck.

also. . . there is a shift tube mounted on top of the column. One end connects to the cable that goes to the trans and does the shifting. The other connects to the shift handle and indicator. Does your shift handle feel sloppy? If so, the shift handle, tube, bushings and plunger are surprisingly easy to replace as is the indicator itself. just tryin to help (by the way, my '01 is off exactly 1gear , the indicator has one end that sticks up in the instrument cluster and one that mounts a small wire to the shift tube. the mount on my tube is cracked just don't feel like changing it right now)
