What or if later model trannys will bolt up to my 300 6.
Mine is a 86 with a granny 4 slush box 4x4. Im curious is i could pull a 5 speed and transfer case from maybe a mid 90s truck and just have it bolt up. Must say i would love more mpg and be able to run it on the highway.
Yep. They didn't change the "small-block" bell housing bolt pattern, and your 6 uses that pattern, so they will bolt up. Even the big ZF5 will bolt right on. But, obviously, you have to find a tranny from behind the 6, 302, or 351W.
Sweet. My uncle has a 90s flare side just setting in a field. Motors shot and mice have gotten to the wires.
The stick shifts dont have electronics do they?
Is any of them a no no? Like prone to trouble, poly gears, or maybe a transfer that wears out the chains more often than others? Must say this is better news than i have seen in a couple weeks.
there are 2 models of 5 speed available: the m5od "mazdog" found in rangers and f150s, or the zf5, a heavy duty workhorse.
as the applications i just mentioned suggest, the mazdog is a light duty tranny, so it'll be fine if you use your truck for a commuter, but not if you really work your truck.
the zf is more expensive because theres more demand for it., just make sure you get one from a small block engine or the bell housing will be wrong.
in either case, you're a 4x4, so make sure the donor truck is as well. a tranny can't be converted from 2 to 4 wheel drive except by a complete teardown and changing the output shaft, which i suspect you don't want to do.
Yep, Josh nailed it. Make your choice and lie in it. Or, is that bed and lay in it? I never get that straight.
Anyway, stick shifts have to "electronics", just a backup light switch and maybe a neutral switch. But in a Flareside I'll bet you are looking at the M5OD.
While we're on the subject, I'm going to jack the thread with some pertinent info. If I get a zf5 for my 300-6, is the flywheel, clutch or related hardware different? I know the m5od will use the same components as a 4spd.
Btw OP, I'd trade an m5od for a 4spd if you were closer. I have two for 4x4
The ZF's for the larger engines do have a larger diameter input shaft, so take a different clutch. I don't know about the small-block pattern, but a way to find out is to go to some site like O'Reilly's and look up the clutch for your truck and one for a later truck w/a ZF5.
The flywheel stays with the engine and the pressure plate w/the flywheel - assuming you don't go to a clutch that is too large in OD.
The throwout bearing also has to be larger if the input shaft is larger. But, a word of caution here - you need to check the fit of the throwout bearing with the fingers of the pressure plate. I had a problem when I installed the ZF in Dad's truck as the fingers came too close together and destroyed the throwout bearing. However, I took that bearing to the parts store and the manager found a bearing from a Dodge that works perfectly. Spec's in Dad's ZF5 Swap - somewhere toward the end.
Ok another q. If i pull everything from the flareside or another donor truck. Can i use all of that system as a straight bolt in? I mean same disc, throw out, provided its in good shape i mean. Also are the cross members always the same or do i need to snag the donor one too.
Snag all you can. Your parts should fit, especially since you should have hydraulic linkage, but you never know. It really should be a bolt-in. Oh yes, you may need the transmission cover in the floor as the M5OD may be taller than yours. But having that cover and boots will make it easy - no cutting. Also, check the wiring to the tranny as the later one might have a different plug.
What about the speedo? Check that it uses a cable and comes out of the t-case.
I don't have info for codes in the 90's, but as it may vary by year you should tell us what year the of the Flair Side.
And, btw, you might want to get the drive shaft. Don't know what wheelbase yours is vs that one, but if they are the same you might need the shaft. I don't think you will, but you don't know.
