What Tranny would work?

I'm thinkin about putting an automatic in my truck, right now i have an NP435 with a Dana 21 T-case. My Truck has a 351 Cleveland in it, and the bellhousing is for a 302. I have an NP205 t-case just sitting there and i would love to replace the Dana. So here's my question, would i need to find an automatic out of a 4 wheel drive truck? or would any tranny work and i'd just have to get an adapter plate between the tranny and the t-case?........

Ford did something with their transfer cases that Chevy is very well known and even loved for. Interchangeability. Almost all, if not all, transfer cases in ford vehicles all used the same mounting bolt pattern. As for the tranny - yes it has to be 4wd. A 2wd one won't work unless you have a tranny shop swap out the output shaft. Just make sure that you get the "extension housing" (5-8" long on a C6) or you'll have hell getting it put together. The Ford bellhousing patterns are as follows:

300-6/289/302/351W/351C - "Small Block" Bolt pattern
351M/400/429/460 - "Big Block" Bolt Pattern
"FE" Series (only god knows the numbers) - FE Bolt Pattern

So, in your case, any 4wd transmission that is bolted up to the aforementioned engines should fit right up to your 351C/NP205, provided you get the extension housing. Just a little more info on that thing - it's either 5" or 8" long depending on the year of the tranny (If you give me the details of your truck, I'll tell you what you need). The tranny side has a VERY IRREGULAR bolt pattern on it while the t-case side has a circular 6-bolt pattern with a little notch in it (very important). It's there for linkage clearance. All in all, I believe this swap should go pretty seamless, you probably won't even have to modify your x-member. If you go ahead and give me the details of your vehicle and your swap (e-mail me directly if you'd like) I could tell you exactly what you are going to need to do. One more thing, forget trying to get gaskets for the extension housing. If you can find them, they are like $6 apiece. Just go down to an auto parts store and get some gasket maker for $4 a roll. You can make about 3 sets of gaskets with one roll and it's simple to do with the extension housing on a table. Again, let me know if you need any help. Do me a favor and keep me posted.
