fella's i got a couple of quick questions here and i'll go away . first : does the flathead and y -block share the same bell housing and or bolt pattern ? reason for asking is i have the heavy 4 speed out of a 54 or 5 1 ton and the bellhousing if i want 'em and obviously will use the tranny for the 53 . second : has any one ever had the half bell hoising on an earlier block milled off and drilled to use the late model flatty stuff .? thanx again guy's !!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn't think you can mill off the cast-on bell on 59-series flatties, and make it so you can bolt an 8BA bell to it, because the bosses for the 8BA bolts aren't there. Nothing to drill and tap. Is that what you mean?
You can use all the "late model" stuff on the earlier blocks.
They are the same thing, only different.
The transmission bolt patterns should match, bellhousing won't (Between y-Block/Flatmotor.)
ok doke on both . so the search for the appropriate bellhousing continues , and as far as milling the other i was just curious , just in case ya know .

1954/55 = The Borg Warner 4TE AS1 T-98 is the only 4 speed listed in the parts catalog. It was used on F100/700's; B500/700's and C550/700's. Ford part number: B3C-7001-C.
The same transmission was also used in 1953 on the same trucks I listed above.
This B3C-7001-C transmission was NOT used prior to 1953.
The T-98 used in 1948/52 has a different part number: A8T-7001-A. Among other things, the case is different.
TBAC-7505-A .. Bellhousing ~ 1953 ~ Used with the T-98, Borg Warner 3 speed overdrive, and the Borg Warner T87D H/D 3 speed manual.

To get that 1954/55 T-98 4 speed to work with a flatty, the bellhousing must be from 1953 only...and only with the three trannies I listed above. If anything else wooda worked, I wooda listed it. My info comes from the 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog.

The Flathead six and the Flathead V8 bells don't interchange.
The transmissions that donot have the halfbell as part of the case will bolt to all ford bellhousing that use the "Tall Narrow" Bolt patterns.

Is the TBAC-7505-A bellhousing a 1953 only? According to the 48-56 truck parts book it mates an 8BA Flathead V8 to the T98, T87D or BW 3 spd OD. Will this same bellhousing mate these transmissions to the M254/H226 Flathead sixes? If not, what bellhousing was used for the M254 & T98 in a 53' F600?
Thanks
The six bell housing is different. It's a one year only part as '53 was the first T98 trans with no rear mount and the last year for the flat six. NumberDummy probably has a part number...
May be difficult to find....

You dug up a 7+ year old thread (12/2007) to ask this question, I wasn't posting parts catalog pics back then, have only been posting them since April 2013.

Kinda figured the FH six would be different, but was hoping for commonality with the 8BA FH V8. The one year only isn't good news either but par for the course. I somehow usually end up looking for the least produced parts. Thanks for the reply, Tinman52.

See 7505 =
ND, you never know where a google search will lead you ... sometimes to 7 yr old FTE thread. The thread had a lot of good bellhousing info, but I needed a little more, so it seemed a good place to ask about the FH six-bellhousing-transmission compatibility. Some FTE threads are like "wine & cheese" they get better with age. Thanks for the reply and sharing your expertise.
