But don't spend money on all new coolant until after you know what is going on with your oil cooler. Top off with Ford Gold (if you have OE coolant) but I would not recommend sticking with the factory coolant after you flush the system. If you still have a big temp delta after your engine temperature is up to the 190 range, you are going to dump everything and flush when you install a new oil cooler and egr cooler. So until then, save your money on new coolant and new oil. If everything turns out to be ok once your operating temp is hanging around 190- It might be a good idea to flush out the cooling system and go with some type of extended life coolant (ELC). People on here have different feelings about flushing with a cleaner (VC9). I'm against it for the most part because I suspect it causes more things to end up lodged in the oil cooler. But lots of guys on here have more experience than I do. -Mike
Going in for the first time, be aware the drain for coolant is easy to access, nylon/plastic hex on the bottom of the radiator. Be gentle, don't break it, Lefty loosy, righty tighty just like a normal fastener. No need to pinch any hoses, and there is an o-ring to seal that should be already installed on the new thermostat, no paper gasket. Also, the thermostat is an assembly, you are basically replacing the whole rad hose neck that bolts on to the front engine cover. Finally - do a cold soak overnight and check that your temps - coolant, oil, air intake - are all within a degree of each other as an indicator that your sensors are all working properly.
Ok thanks guys. And yeah, I was just gonna replace what I drained, not flush it all. So the EGR cooler has to be replaced when the Oil Cooler is replaced?
Understood. Hooray! Haha. How involved is all of that? I've done intake gaskets on SBC's before, but I just don't know much about diesels. Thats why I'm here though, to learn.

Ok thanks. I'll prob just do an EGR delete (if it hasn't already been done) while I'm in there if we go that far.
As for the coolant, is there anything I can pick up at NAPA that will suffice? Not a Ford or International dealer around me, would like to pick some up at lunch. Or even Wal-Mart maybe?

Napa might have the Zerex ELC.
You don't have a caterpillar dealer nearby? Their Cat EC-1 is fantastic. Or a heavy truck dealer? They would have Rotella ELC
Ok ran some errands during lunch, did some pretty aggressive in town driving and made sure to check and remember the numbers. Was unable to find coolant though, may just go to the International dealer tomorrow after work. Its only 12 miles, but in Birmingham that's like a 1.5 hr round trip ha.
T-stat is obviously opening at 183/184. That is very clear.
Highest oil temp I saw was 193. Idk if I just didn't remember right last night (though I'm pretty sure I saw 200-205), OR if it might be the Banks stuff? I had it on level 4 just for *****s and giggles. Put it on the economy tune when I got home, which is what it will probably stay on for 99% of its life.
Gonna get that t-stat replaced and do some more monitoring. Ford oil coolers are cheaper than I though, less than $300 from Tasca.
If you don't have studs in your truck, stay way from that level 4 unless you wanna replaces your head gaskets too.....not sure WHAT a Banks will do to your tranny either!
Alright, was able to go by the International dealer and get a couple gallons of Rotella ELC pre-mixed, dang they are proud of that stuff! I also observed temps some more. I called the biggest local diesel shop and spoke to their 6.0 guru, said he's doing head studs on two right now. I gave him my numbers and he said put a new thermostat in it but that the 200-205 oil temp numbers were fine. It seems to peak around 207 under long, hard acceleration but cools back down to 199-202 quickly, within 30 seconds. He said he would advise against replacing the cooler with those numbers even though they could make a few hundred dollars off doing it.
How much did that oil cooler run ya? I may be having to replace mine after a the last flush I did. My deltas are running about 12 degrees after the flush. Before the flush I was running 8 degrees. No good dead goes unpunished.
