I am in the process of removing the heater box on my '80 to replace the heater core. I have it all loose, except for the bolt in the attached photo below. All it does is turn,is there a nut on the back side of it? I don't see one visible inside the cab. I need to get this #$%^ bolt out, any ideas??
I don't see in the parts catalog the nuts that the bolts go into. I see the bolts, but not the nuts. But, if you don't find a way to get it out I would be considering using a Dremel or somesuch to grind the head of the bolt off. However, you don't want to get it too hot or you'll melt the plastic.
Edit: Chris beat me AND had the right answer. I'd rep him if I could, so maybe someone else will? Good job, Chris. What page was that?

I don't know the page number, it's one of Ralph's (81-F-150-Explorer) images that I think is from a Service Manual.
I just know to go look at Caleb H's stats, find all threads started by him, and find that particular thread I linked to as it answers just about every conceivable question about heater core replacement without A/C.
Add to that, I had just recently fixed (resoldered the tubes to the side tank) my own heater core shortly before Caleb began his thread and I remember it fairly well.
Thanks, Chris. Didn't think to look in the Service Manual, but then it is in the shop and I'm not. Maybe tomorrow......
No problem, and I hope it helps.
I've been in the process of cleaning up the house and rearranging things due to my mom now being here, I'm condensing all of my car/truck books to near the computer as I find myself using them there more than in the garage.
As for the nut on the other side of the heater box, I was pretty perturbed at finding that Ford did it that way! Definitely not one of their better ideas IMHO....
Jeff - While you have the cowl off you might consider installing screen on the back side of it. Or, getting an '87 or later one from the salvage as they have pin holes rather than slots so don't let the leaves and twigs in like ours do.
And, I was able to get the cowl off by getting the hood in just the right position, neither up nor down, but it was an effort. Lots easier I'd bet w/the hood hinges loosened at the hood and slid up/forward, but make sure you mark the original position first.

Yep, that did not make My day, but I will get it off
