I have a 74 Ford F-350 CC. I bought the truck and kept the motor that was in it. It's a 390 bored and stroked to a 454 or 455. The guy I bought it from couldn't remember. It has a 427 Cobra Jet cam in it. Any way when the motor changes tone and there is a rattle/ping from the motor when I take it on the freeway. It does it consistently and I can time when it's going to do it. When I get off the freeway and drive through town a lot of the time the sound goes away. But when I get back on the freeway it starts back up and does it. Can anybody help me trouble shoot this?
The guy I bought the motor from said when he had the motor built the rocker arm came loose and they had to go back in and tighten it down.
I'm pretty new to the old trucks and motors and how to diagnose sounds.
If I start my truck, most of the time, it doesn't rattle ping. But when I hit the freeway within 4 miles it does it. If I get off the freeway and park it you can't really notice the sound. If I rev it the sound fluctuates with the RPMs.
Have you ever had a timing light on it to see what your timing is set to? Aftermarket ignition/distributor or anything like that? Could it be detonation? What is the compression ratio of the motor? What octane fuel do you run?
Yea. I just had the motor put in a couple months ago and we had it at 6 or 8. It's an aftermarket ignition and distributor. What do you mean by detonation? I don't know the compression ratio. I know it's pretty high. I run 92 octane. I've added booster and that didn't help.
