I Think I have two problems

Hi, I do appreciate this site and members

My truck started light bluish white ( hell I'll be honest, I'm color blind ) smoking last week when NOT when i started it but as driving away from a stop. This was in the 70 degree afternoon. It went away after a few stoplights to the freeway. I had already run it in the 40 degree morning and no driving or cold start smoke. I also added about 35-40 oz coolant since i noticed it was low. It runs fine all week, but uses quart coolant 200 miles, no smoke mornings, smokes first few minutes afternoon, not at idle but on take off. Today I found my egr valve oily and greasy. Ten months ago it was bone dry. Three months ago I installed an SCT using MorePowerTuning tunes. It is also reaching operating water temp very quickly, couple 3 minutes. Not over heating as I ensure coolant level is ok

103,500 miles
New FICM/Atlas 40 (last month )
Blue Spring
stock oil cooler and egr and gold coolant
Coolant filter
13-16 deltas average

SO , Questions to problem #1
If I thouroughly back flush cooling system will it cure the leaky oil or egr cooler or what ever caused the greasy mess ? (I wouldn't think so )
Could the smoke be related ? Could the advanced timing/increas fuel pressure from SCT tuner or hotter Atlas 40 accellerate this problem ?

Why smokes on start-up in warmer temp and not cold and then stops ? Which brings me to problem 2.
I still occasionally get a bucking/jerk when cruising. I've read, talked, read some more.
It could be as simple as
*needing an oil change. (I also notice last week my oil, Delo 15/40 and Archoil additive went from still clear @ <4k miles to BLACK )
*Chaffed wire.
*A sympton of HPOP fitting/dummy plugs needing replaced. (Though they have)
*Bad injector. ( 6 months ago balance test showed nil )

SO If an injector was to be near failure would it smoke more on a cold start than warm ?

Any replies would be very helpful as I think I can do flush myself but egr and oil might not be my calling and I didn't mention HGs.
The smoking, black oil and coolant loss surfaced all at once. I don't know where to go for qualified diagnostics and service.
Tim
Gonna park it and ride the bike for now

Tim do you have any gauges, most use a scan gauge with live data ,need to get some senser readings, coolent and oil temps, what does the smoke smell like, sweet or diesel carbon.

04badford,

I have a scanguage 2 running on dash

ect 184-188
eot 199-203
Last week they jumped and averaging about 13 delta at best. For months was about 8 delta.

Honestly can't tell you what smoke smells like cause it's NO Smoke at idle. It smokes a moderate cloud on take-off.

Tommorrow I can smell tail pipe when its running.

Thanks and LMK any other parameters to check

Tim

You need to nail down the source of the coolant loss. If it is not dripping or venting out the degas cap, then you have ane EGR cooler leak or "possibly" leaking head gaskets. I assume you do not have head studs?

BTW - the SCT does not increase fuel pressure - that is constant, except for reduced pressure from flow related pressure losses.

It sure sounds like you ALSO have an issue with the tune ...... or an injector, and maybe even some other things as well. It is not normal to heat up that quickly from my experience. Smoking oil is not normal either - I assume you mean there is a noticeable amount of smoke coming from the dipstick tube when the engine is running?

Hey Mark, Benny, 04

Sorry I'm late, long day at work.

Sorting this out, Yes I have bad egr cooler and oil cooler suffering. Also after cleaning EGR valve... Scanguage posting 0 for both EVD/EVM. Sure that is bad too.

Stopped at Independent shop and 2 dealers ( So Cal only few miles apart ). All tell me just have them do EGR and Oil cooler then test for HGs. So I have to decide: or do
HGS, standpipe, IPR ?, etc all at once. Also need to figure if I can do it myself. $$$ are tight. I truly want a reliable rig.

Mark, I re-read my post. Sorry if i led you to believe smoke coming out dipstick. No it's not. Also my mild tunes, as far as I know have worked well, tow once,
and
performance/economy 4 months have been monitored. Just last week smoke, loss and then egr gunk. I still suppose a VC-9 flush will not reverse the gunk ?

Gonna be busy next two days. I will re-post when I decide next action.

Thanks, Tim

When you said "smoking, black oil ,,,,,,,,," I guess I mistakenly assumed you meant the oil was smoking. Sorry.

As far as black oil goes, that is normal.

Hi,

So I found a shop to do my egr/oil coolers. ( Sorry guys, Not that I'd like to but I have limited resources ).

A little trigger in my head is the "faster warm-ups". Could that too be a sympton of just bad egr/oil cooler ?

Thanks,

Tim

BTW Truck is parked ': (

a short follow-up and something that'll blow your mind

Hi,

So I found an independet "Ford Diesel Specialist" shop to replace my egr and oil coolers ( bullit proof egr and ford oil kit) Included standard work was to clean egr valve, manifold, center of turbo, fresh oil and elc coolant w/flush if necessary. I'm not naming the shop yet but i got a decent price and felt as comfy as i nervously could.

The owner also suggested using his "Ford" equipment to ensure truck has latest updates, more concern for tranny smootheness. I do have a mild SCT tune installed. Owner (GUY) said no prob as long as no updates neede only checking. I said all that is fine but PLEASE visually check and reinstall all my wiring harness etc. as well as hook up computer BEFORE tearing down to check for codes, pending, parameters of ICP/IPR , etc. He said yes after asking me why and I respond just want to get what needs done now. AND I had explained how the truck smoked, deltas, and oily egr

When called for truck GUY asked me if truck ever surged or continued revving after releasing throttle. No it never has. He said he was getting that and a pending P2284.

An hour later I did pick it up he had it idling with a laptop and said code had cleared, may have been air or I'm having an issue with my tune.

Driving home I get a P2284 on my scanguage. The truck does sound noisier, and over revs when throttle released, and blew black smoke when throttled abruptly. BUMMER to me is my deltas avg. about 9-11, was 13-15

KOEO
ICP 0
IPR 11
KOER IDLE
ICP 580
IPR 20

1500 RPMS
ICP 820-840
IPR 15

COASTING/NO THROTTLE 60-70 MPH
ICP 875 CONSISTENT
IPR 28.8

I 3/4 Punched it more than enough times and ICP HIT 3000s IPR 40+. Sorry I was watching around me to totally get on it or be exact. Also don't have voltage meas. on Scanguage. Will check that in morning. One more thing EGR meas. and demand 0, other words not working

So i call GUY, don't worry i ain't mad, and he says he'll stick by me through this and asks me to reset SCT to stock and then retune as maybe pcm got glitched. No prob as I will do that and check harness on ICP, also disconnect-reconnect PCM fuse.
Hope this all works but do any of you have further commentor suggestion ???

NOW THE PART YOU'VE WAITED FOR, THE TRUCK LITERALLY RUNS LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL AND GOT 29.6 MPGs !! no im not crazy, that was 72 miles hiway and 7 miles hilly town. Im pretty sure about this.

Thanks if you made it this far and ditto if you have advice or ?

Guess the 29.6 scared everybody away. Benny, what do you think of those ICP/IPR values ?

The Dummy plugs and Standpipe were done by Ford in Dec. 2011. I don't know if that involves this screen 'they' say collapses. I do recall a high then normal idle recently but i thought it was normal warm-up.

Benny knows these values better , but on the high rpms have to be takein at 2500 rpm in park.IPR 40,60,50 I could be wrong . you said the Icp pig tail was changed? in the tech folders there are all the values for scan gauge II or go to there web site . also eds ficm web has values to.
