I have a 2005 f-250 and i was having problems with black smoke. I did some reading and decided to unplug my egr valve and it ran great again. now a week later after a new fill up and some colder weather around 35 to 40 in the morning it has started to spew white smoke while accelerating down the street. It does it worse when its a slow acceleration rather then a get up on it. any suggestions?
where is the egr cooler and would i be able to replace that myself i am pretty handy? I checked my coolant level and it is still on max but i only drive a few miles a day so i dont know how soon i should see a change in the level.
Your coolant level should never be filled past the min mark (that is the actual full level) otherwise it will blow out of the Degas cap. Here is a picture for you. I had someone block mine off for me.
So i was talking to a fellow diesel owner in town asking for some addvice and he told me about the possibility of having water in my diesel. So i put some additive in and i have not been smoking since. hopefully thats the end of the problem.
White smoke can either be raw fuel or it can be water from a leaking EGR cooler.
Water in the diesel should not be making it past the fuel filter. If it is, you WILL have injector failures - period.
Fuel additive should "demulsify" the water and allow it to be removed at the primary filter - IF you are good about draining the water out regularly. If not, you will end up with low fuel pressure and/or let water through. Both of these are bad for injectors.
i have new fuel filters i just got in that i need to install so i will do that. also how do you drain the water out?also would the additive make the smoke stop if i still had a leaking egr cooler?
There is a small screw on the side of the HFCM module that gets removed with an allen wrench. BEFORE you take it off, place a pan underneath and get ready to be drenched in the sweet smell of diesel. When it is empty, replace the plug and look up HFCM drain plug upgrade on your computer. They are $20.00 well spent and you will not longer need to wear diesel when draining the separator.
It came from the 6.0 tech folder sticky at the top of the forum page. It would be a good idea to sort of familiarize yourself with the tech folder....there's a ton of info in there pertaining to the maintenance of our trucks.

had same problem to the black smoke unplug egr valve. came back Deleted egr valve and rebuilt oil cooler oh and installed coolant filter and have ZERO ZERO SMOKE even when on the gas. 5,000 miles so far so good.
can you just cap your coolant line going to your egr cooler and if not what about just running the line past the cooler and not having any coolant go in the cooler?
