Hey, i'm new to the forum but thought i'd give her a shot.. I have a 1988 F250 she has a 460 with MFI fuel injection backed up by a 5 speed manual. i want any tips on what i can do to add Horsepower and performance as much as possible for a decent price under 1,000 but can go u p to 2,000 thanks so much!
Here are a couple things you can do. Remove silencer restrictions in air intake tubes, insulate air box and intake tubes to make a cold air system, headers, good flowing exhaust(either two into large diameter one,or dual with crossover. Google project mpg, it's a write up Peterson 4wd did several years ago. It has good tips for both power and mpg. I know someone who ported his heads and swapped to a ford Motorsport cam. He told me its discontinued but that you can still get it from crane. He was very happy with the results. A good tuneup and bumping the timing up a bit helps too
Thanks! I've been working on the exhaust, i' going to take the cat out within a week or so i have a flowmaster on it for a muffler now tho.. an i'll work on it this weekend an try a few of those. it's just such a big engine with measly hp it's sad needs to be boosted a good amount.. if you know of any other good plases please let me know. thanks!
I put dual 2.5 inch exhaust with crossover pipe and dual flowmasters all run down the passenger side(basically the stock location) no cat. Pretty noticeable difference for me. It's my experience that these engines are set up for pretty low rpm torque so looking to maximize its strengths are best. If I were doing exhaust again idmdo headers at that time. Do a forum search for headers. There are some guys who found headmans fit with the 5 sp even though the fit guide said otherwise. Definitely check out the article I mentioned. The also used a hyper tech product, I'm not sure if it would still be available. I changed my distributor out recently to fix a problem with the pickup inside and I'm pretty sure I found power I didn't know I was missing. Go to the big block385 part of the forum and search six liter tuneup , it refers to a guys username . Good info on a good tuneup befor trying a little more timing. Don't go too far I dont think our 460's like too much especially with ethanol gas
Ok, thanks so much for all of your help! I found a nice set of headman headers I think I'm going to get for it and i'll check out the other forum in the morning. I know I need to replace my distribuitor but not sure on the one to get. Mine is the one that came with the truck 100, 600 miles ago.. I looked at msd but they would eat up near all my budget is there a good happy medium from stock to those?

I can say from experience don't get a richporter tech distributor. I got a new one this weekend and it took a crap in the first 1/4 mile. I ended up with a reman and it had a new pip in it. haven't driven it yet but response seems greatly improved from revving it up in the garage lol.
If you search this forum for 7.5 headers there was quite a discussion on what fits. That's pretty low miles for a truck that age. I've been told the cam I mentioned earlier was quite an improvement too. Good luck with your mods. Keep us posted as to results
Ok thanks i'll take a look at it. And ya the guy I bought if from had it since new he was a older guy hardly used it. An i'll try the cam to i'll see if I can find one first. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for all your help!

Thanks! I'll look into some different ones I want one that improves it more than what I have. I was talking to a guy that drag races yesterdaya he said you want an ignition that gives a good healthy spark I want to find something good for around 2-300 if possible
