Exhaust setup for max HP...

I am curious what setup would give the most power gains. Duals or single pipe. I know a lot of guys mod their exhaust simply for sound. I cannot mess with the cats here in Mass, and I really don't want to invest in headers. Is there a difference in the different styles or are they all more or less the same? Thanks. KP

well, i have an 84 f-250 with a 460, i have been calling around the portland-metro area exhaust shops and for the most low-mid range torque, a few people have said to have dual 2.5" into a high flow muffler and have a single 3" coming out, but that is considering that i dont have to worry about cats

i would go with a 3" cat-back system, and get headers for max performance.

there is ALOT of different styles and setups, so i would call around, get quotes, ask questions and see what you can come up with, i'm getting my exhaust installed tommarrow (Yahoo!) and i will post and tell you how it turns out

Thanks Blacksilo, I would love to hear how you make out with yours. I have always been from the school that less restriction = more power, thus a single pipe would be best. Duals do look cool but I am more about performance over image. Thanks for the reply... Kp

true duals would be more performance. cat back won't hurt performance but don't expect any gains either. unless you decide to go true duals anything you do to your exhaust excluding headers isn't going to do much of anything. nothing worth the trouble anyway. if you plan on doing anything to your exhaust other than headers i would say true duals are in order if your looking for performance. with cats if you need em. otherwise forget about everything but the headers. the rest would be cash down the drain unless your looking for sound.

My exhaust is (Yahoo!!!!) i highly remomend darrles mufflers for your exhaust needs ask for Eldon he knows what he is doin!!

I got the single 3" from the Y pipes to the muffler and 3" out of the muffler...the muffler is a flowmaster 40 series...i highly recommend this setup over duals because of the scavage effect it has on the exhaust gases. It also is found on the dyno to produce more power over the rpm range compared to dual exhaust systems.

the biggest eghaust will give you the most power increase but at rpm's you will never see base your tubing size around the rpm's where you would like the power

^though it was a bit difficult to understand what he was saying, he is correct. unless you want all of your power high up on the rpm scale bigger is not always better. but dual exhaust is gonna net you the biggest gain reguardless of tubing size. dual exhaust with 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 should be about right for good low end and high end.

Seems to be a little controversy here... Other than exhaust tubing size, do duals really make more power than a single outlet?? By duals I mean cat back, I assume true duals do make better HP. Anyone else care to chime in on this??

they offer slightly better on a cat back for your setup (4.10's) i would think you would want midrange power i would get either dual 2.25 pipes or a single mandral bent 2.75inch pipe

cat back dual doesn't do much of anything performance wise, it performs just like a single exhaust would. true duals is what i mean when i say duals for performance. 2.25 is a good size for the midrange rpm torque like blly said.

How about a cat back duel system without mufflers, just mandrel bent pipes ran to the bumber? Maybe no performance like you all say, but how would the sound be?

well you might notice a little bit performance wise since your getting rid of the stock muffler. as for sound it would help to know the truck and engine.

edit: heres a link to a exhaust clip site. decide for yourself.
