Glow Plug Wiring Question

Hey all,

Hopefully someone with electrical knowledge will be able to help me out. Ihave a 2007 PSD and would like to find a way to utilize the glow plug timingcircuit to operate a relay for another application. I am not concerned with adverselyeffecting the original equipment operation. Any and all help is welcome.

I am a licensed electrician specializing in controls. So I have a little knowledge with relays, timers, lights, strobes, locks and junk. Can I ask what exactly you are trying to do?

I am trying to find the most reliable and effective way to power a grid heater on my Ford Cummins conversion. I am now thinking of controlling it with the Ford glow plug control module. I am still trying to figure out what sensors are need to allow the GPCM to function correctly.

The glow plug on-time is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and is a function of oil temperature, barometric pressure and battery voltage.

KRDiesel,
You forgot the price of the good tea in China.

But really how long do you need it to be on?
You may be able to use something else to trigger it
and a solid state relay timing device to control the on time.
Just some thoughts,

Sean

Isn't the 5.9 grid heater controller only around $60? I had to replace several back in the day on our Ingersoll-Rand 115/116 compactors.

It's a simple hook-up and if I remember right fairly cheap.

AF: Glow Plug System
Introduction AF: Pinpoint Tests

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Description
The glow plug system is composed of solid state glow plug control module (GPCM), glow plugs and the associated wiring harness. The glow plug ON time is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM) and is a function of oil temperature, barometric pressure and battery voltage. The PCM enables the GPCM, which drives the individual glow plugs. Glow plug ON time normally varies between 1 to 120 seconds. In addition to PCM control, the GPCM internally limits the glow plug operation to 180 seconds regardless of PCM commanded ON time. The power to the glow plugs is provided through the GPCM solid state drivers directly from the vehicle battery. The GPCM monitors and detects individual glow plug functionality. The failures detected by the GPCM are passed to the PCM using a serial communication signal on the diagnostic line.

Note: Wait-to-start lamp ON time is independent from GPCM ON time.

There is a ton of stuff online about those heaters. I would agree with bullit if they make a controler use that sucker. The cool thing about that is they will have a wiring diagram. Some people turn that heater on with a simple switch instead of like your thinking. You could wire it to the ignition on a timed relay. The time would be the same all the time so it wouldent matter the temp. These small relays are adjustable.
