The PO of my 1997 F350 installed Autolite GPs, got all of them out but the one for Piston #1. What happened is the cap securing the heating element to the top of the GP assembly popped off while ratcheting the GP out. I finished unscrewing the GP and the body of the GP came out leaving the whole length of the heating element securely stuck. No matter what I try I cannot get it to move up or down or around.
Thinking of pulling the hood and starting the engine to blow it out...thoughts/comments?
Have you looked into the "slide hammer" trick? You take a vise-grip, remove the bolt, replace it with a longer bolt with some sort of weight slipped on it, clamp the vise-grip down on what's left of the GP. Then, when you yank on the weight, it has a slide-hammer pulling effect.
I take it you've soaked it in PB Blaster and/or carb cleaner?
I soaked it with pb blaster then tapped it down maybe a 1/4", then turned the motor over by hand to push the gp up. Repeated about 4 times and on the fifth it shot out . It worked well but I don't know how easy it would be with the motor in. Mine was on a stand.
i never did this on a powerstroke, but it works great on an IDI.
what i do is spray liberally with PB Blaster. then i hook a reversable cordless drill to the glow plug.
slowly rotate the plug, and spray with PB while pushing down and pulling up.
the turning action with the PB lubrication will cut the tip down so it can be removed.
