Can anyone point me in the direction of some very detailed instructions on how to remove and clean my turbo? What are some common mistakes and the consequences of when doing this? Just got off the phone with a shop and they quoted me $700 to do it, no way I'm spending that much if I can learn how to do it myself.
Please dont pay that much! Ive pulled my turbo a few times to clean, its a breeze. Its always good to learn something too. Getting it out is gunna be a pain, you really gotta want it. Once the bolts are out, get out a long pry bar and pop it up and off the pedastal. Buff the unison ring contact surface and unison ring until its stainless shiny steel! A lot of people use a little antisieze on the vane pegs but i dont.. ive had it lock up. Before you separate the turbo, see where the two halves of the turbo meet and tap a mark on both halves with a chizzle so you can line them back up when reassembling. After you get it apart take a pic of the position of the vanes. Once you get it apart you can really see how it works, with the actuator n whatnot (its gunna dump some oil so put it on a pan). The pin on the actuator lines up with a hole on the unison ring. Just make sure all the carbon is out of the turbo before putting it back in. You dont wanna go back in in a couple months. A dremel with a few good buff pads will get er done.
Seems like everyone has used a power tool to clean it, is it even doable by hand with something like a Brillo pad or a gun cleaning brush? That's the idea I had in my head, was going to use gun cleaner-lube-protectant.
