Im having a hard time getting my cluster to work properly. Fuel guage claims over a full tank when theres not even half, RPM and AMP meter work, but MPH, oil, and water temp arn't coming through. I'ver started rechecking connections and they seem connected so far. Any suggestions?
Check that the ground behind bottom of LH cowl pannel has a clean unpainted connection to the cab and that it is tight, that grounds all of your instrument cluster and can cause odd issuse, and have you checked the simple things like fuses?

Would the vans have that same ground there for the cluster as well?
All my gauges work well, but the fuel gauge isn't reliable. Doesn't "always" read what's in the tank.

Posible that the ground is in the same place, what year is it, Ill look it up.
The other thing to check is on the back of the insturment cluster where the electrical plugs go in, make sure its nice shinny copper color (see pic) and also, the 4 rectangle metal things in the picture, they just "lay" on top of the copper foil, agin an area for poor connections, as you can see I soldered them (all of them on the cluster) just to make sure I wouldn't have to worry about them down the road.

'85 E350 van. Been a long since i've played with a van cluster, but I don't quite remember it looking like that behind it.

Thats a cluster from a 87-91 truck, your cluster has the voltage regulator on it which feeds the fuel, oil and coolant gauges, so it wont be that. I don't think the vans had 2 tanks so that rules out the fuel selector valve, so that leaves only a few options left, bad connection, poor ground or the wiper on the sending unit is going intermitened and you may be able to clean it (see pic, left one is the clean one) Ground locations for the sending up could be either:
LH frame crossmember, above fuel tank select soleniod; (dual tanks)
Center of rear frame crossmember; (138 in. wheelbase)
LH sideof floor pan, near transmission; (124 in. wheelbase)
Vans did have dual tanks, and mine does to. It works also.
I saved those pics, I'll have to look at it next summer as the van is stored for winter. I also have a battery drain issue I have to solve to, it's the cluster always staying live. All the gauges always stay on. I takes weeks before it drains the batteries enough that it won't start, but it gets annoying knowing that problem is there.
