I have a 2012 F250 Super Duty with uplifter switches, coin holder on one side and I am trying to wire up a light that mounts to the underside of my rear bumper for plowing.
I have read every thread on here about wiring up these switches, but I cannot figure out what I am missing or doing wrong!
First of all, what is the harness behind the coin holder for?
Anyways, I easily found the 4 wires above the parking brake, but that is as far as I have got. The light I am using is only 2 wires, power, ground, of course and it also has a 15 amp fuse tied into it.
I could use some idiot proof step by step help how to do this?
Thanks!!
You hook your positive wire off your lights to one of the wires you mentioned using the one that is the proper amperage for the lights you're using, then ground the other wire off your lights. If you've done this and they're still not working, you could have blown the fuse for the switches by connecting up to one that was rated at a lower amperage than your lights. Are your up fitter switches lighting up when you turn them on ?
The harness behind the coin holder is probably for the optional integrated brake controller.
Step 1: Mount Light(s)
Step 2: Ground lights at or near the mounting points
Step 3: Run power wire up to the cab (if you mount 2 lights, tie the power wires together and just run 1), preferably secured to the frame, in a loom.
Step 4: There's a few entry points, you can go into a vent at the bottom back of the cab, under the driver side door sill, or up into the engine bay and then connect to one of the pass-through wires located up by the master cylinder - you then find the other end of the corresponding wire under the dash.
Step 5: Hook the power wire to one of the 4 upfitter wires you found - look in the manual to see the rating for each switch and use the closest one to your lights.
Step 6: Flip the switch and enjoy your lights.
Did they remove the pass through wires from the 2012's?
If not the OP could use one to get into the engine bay.
To the OP look for some blunt cut wires near the driver side
hood hinge in the engine bay. If the wires for the uplifters
are in the same place as mine you will find them by
the E-brake and you should also find the other end of the
pass through wires around there.
I have done both. Used the pass through wires supplied by Ford and poked through the rubber boot where the harness goes through near e-brake. Pass through wires in the engine compartment are a pain to get to let alone splice. Going through the harness boot wasn't too bad.
You need to run a wire from your lights to the up fitter blunt cut wires so you may as well run a couple extra in case you want to add anything at a later date. Maverick has you pointed in the right direction.
Ok, so here is where I am at. I wired up everything correctly before I had started this thread, but as madsonp asked, do the switches light up? Well, no they don't!!! I never noticed when I was wiring it up before, but they don't for some reason. The harness is connected in the back, so now what??

I start by looking at the fuses for the switches. You can find a guide to your fuses in the owners manual. If you don't have your owners manual you can find it here. https://owner.ford.com/servlet/Conte...e&ord=43433445
It looks to me like there's 3 fuses for the switch's in the fuse panel by the passenger side footwell and 2 in the fuse panel under the hood by the brake booster.
Regardless of the wiring at this point find out why the upfitters don't illuminate when they are turned on. And yes there are more wires under the dash. Pass through wires for the optional PTO from what I understand.
Until you check the fuses there is no use in going on.
Use a DMM (Digital Multi Meter) to check them. Your eye ball will lie to
you every now and then when it comes to a fuse. It's like they have a mind
of there own.
Yes I have had the key on!! So upon further reading, is the more blunt wires other then the 4 above the parking brake that I need to be using?
First of all did you ever check the fuses yet? The four wires above the brake are the ones you'll use. They are different amperage depending on the amperage requirement for what you're hooking up. You want to connect the positive wire from your lights to one of these wires (depending on the amperage needed) in your case 15 amps so you'll want to connect to the brown one, which will be on switch #4, and the negative to a good ground. Here again is the Ford literature on the wire locations, amperage ratings and wire colors to help you out. https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...ml/Q117-R2.pdf One other question, did your truck come from the factory with the upfitter switches or were they installed later by you or someone else ?
