Ok so my grandpa passed back in July and he has a 64 f100 that was put in the woods back in the early 70's. it's been covered for as long as I can remember. I'm trying to get a hold of it so i can fix her up and keep it for my kids and so on. I'm hoping it's not to far gone as I am going to be up there this weekend to help my grandma with things.
I am a mechanic and have other hot rods. so fixing is not a problem. I am wondering from you guys what the problem areas on these trucks are. Ive all ways been a Gm or a Chrysler guy. So I don't know where the bad rust areas are, safety issues things like that are on these trucks. Any bad spots on the frame to look for? cab?
What I know or my dad thinks he knows about the truck:
2wd
I6
manual ( what gear box could it be?) he thinks thats why it got put out there.
regular cab
Looked like a long box
cracked windshield ( how hard and were to get a knew one?)
I want to keep it how it was origionaly. except for lowering it a little.... Maybe

Welcome to FTE
Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh trans or Warner T-98 4 speed manual trans.
Clear or tinted windshield same: 1961/66 F100/1100; 1963/69 N/NT/T500/1000; 1967/69 F800/1000. Available from any autoglass shop.
Two different windshield weatherstrips: With or without stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings. Both have been reproduced.
Located in MI .. where salt is used on the roads. Rust: Look where radiator support mounts to frame rails, frame cab mounts, cab corners, rocker panels, rear sections of front fenders, drip rails, floor pan-inside and outside of cab.
Flareside (GM: Stepside) has exposed bolt on rear fenders, bed steps in front of fenders, wood bed floor. Styleside (GM: Fleetside) has an all steel bed, no steps or exposed fenders.
Thank you! I am hoping for the four speed. Are there any big problems with either tranny? My grandpa was hard on his pickups so i'm sure the drivetrain is going to be a little rough. I plan to go through it all anyway.

Same as with any manual trans: Seals leak, bearings wear, brass syncro blocker rings wear down to a nub.
If 3 on-the-tree: At the bottom of the steering column underneath the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the shift rods from the trans attach to.
Have one rubber bushing & insulator in each lever. Common: Bushings age crack and/or disintigrate, causing shift lever to bind up between 1st & 2nd.
Very similar experience myself this last month. I got a '65 with a similar description. Sitting since the 70's surrounded by trees. Name a system on it and it had to be gone through. The motor, transmission, and rear axle were fundamentally ok though. Windshield - local shop replaced it far cheaper then I could have gotten one myself - and saved me the labor. I have done many like windshields and was keen to not have to do this one. I have typically been a GM owner until I got this - but never been one to prefer one brand over another. Soft spots to look for have already been mentioned. As long as you are doing the work - should be cheap and easy to get going. I am using mine as a daily driver now and love it.
First and Foremost, Welcome to FTE!! Have both trannys and prefer the T18 4spd, which is basically a 3 spd. If it were to go I would be faced with a dilemma whether to swap for an auto? Suggest work on getting the truck mechanically sound; powertrane, brakes, etc. and take it for a spin; meantime decide if your interested in upgrades. I used the 65 as a learning experiece with respect to body and paint, found info from library and FTE members helpful. Since you are familar with these classic treasure then depending upon intended use; i.e., work horse, and/or daily driver. custome, etc,. they are bout as basic as it gets. Looking foreward to your input and post pic's if you can.
You know, one day, I would like to understand the thinking behind parking the vehicle out in the woods for 30+ years. Right now I still can't as it is something I would never do. I would either keep it running or sell it.
mine was in the woods a lot some people use them like a tractor pullin things around getting wood so on
believe it or not a lot of trucks die from a tree falling on them
roy
Check the cowl vent in front of the windshield and inside the floor vents for leaves and straw. They may have accumulated and caused rust in both areas. I used a ruler to push the leaves from the cowl to the vent then vacuumed them out. You will need to take the vent dampers off to get all the leaves and mulch.
That was the only rust on my truck. It is repairable.

he allways told me that he put it there so that it would remind him to never buy a ford again. he never did but the real reason was that he was gunna part it out and never got around to it.
I always wondered why people collected vehicles in their yards. I have a place down the street from me here that has 15 or so vehicles in various states parked. Don't know if they kept them because they paid for them, or couldn't get rid of them. My grandparents were Great Depression era/WW2 and didn't have much. Granddad didn't keep anything old. Once he wore something out, he would get rid of it and get something new. Grandmother who divorced him... held onto the same vehicle for 30 years.
I guess to each their own. I originally got this project truck and then had a slight case of buyers remorse right away. It has certainly subsided as I can't wait to do the work on the truck and hang onto it for all time. There is something to be said about a vehicle that can be parked in the woods for thirty years then be brought back to life again. Certainly can't say that for the vehicles coming off the line these days.
ND, since you mentioned "Flareside (GM: Stepside) has exposed bolt on rear fenders, bed steps in front of fenders, wood bed floor. Styleside (GM: Fleetside) has an all steel bed, no steps or exposed fenders. " any idea where someone might find replacement steps? Mine aren't beyond repair with some steel and welding but it would be nice to replace the 2 with good ones. I haven't gotten as far back as the bed on the restore yet , but when I do, replacing would be easier than fixing. BTW, It's a 1966 with 8' bed. Thanks Mike

Mar-K (mar-k.com) reproduces Flareside beds/parts, but I think most of it is 6 1/2' bed related.
