Ok, i bought a 77 f150 4x4 with 9 inches of lift, 5.14 gears in the rear and a busted nine inch housing. I am going to rebuild the rear end but i wanted to see if the front gears had been changed to match the rear. The cover has been pulled from the front at some time because i can see the blue rtv on it. However, when i turn the driveshaft, the front gear ratio seems to be about a 2.5 to 1 or so. The lift and everything else i can find was done the right way on the truck. Is it possible that my transfer case has a different drive ratio from front to rear?
As long as you're turning the front drive shaft it wont matter what the transfer case gear ratio is.
Think of it this way.
If you were checking the rear it would'nt matter what gear the tranny ( I know it would be in neutral) was in, one turn, 360 degrees, on the shaft is one turn on the shaft. You could disconnect it from the tranny or transfer case and it will still be one turn.
Have you ever had it in 4WD?
Is the front end open? Was one tire choked to stop it from spinning?
