Replacing Bad Glow Plugs

I have tested the GP Relay and all the GP'S on my 1991 F-250 7.3 IDI and determined my hard cold starting problem is 7 bad GP'S. On researching what it takes to change them out I have found that OTC makes a tool #6005A to assist in pulling stuck GP'S. Has anyone used this tool and does it work as advertised? I am really trying to avoid the expense of pulling the heads because of a GP tip breaking off in the Heads. I have heard what an Expensive Nightmare this can be, Honestly though is it that common of a problem? I bought the Truck used and have no idea what service or repairs have been done to it in the past. It is a very strong runner though. Any help or thought on this will be greatly appreciated.

Maybe it was dumb luck, but I had zero issues replacing mine. From what I have read, the problem comes if the GPs in there are not Motorcraft/Beru because they'll swell.

I have pulled GP's from three different motors numerous times times without any special tools, and never broken one off or had a swelled plug including Autolite, Wellman, Bosch, and of course Motorcraft. You can hit them with a little PB blaster before removal, and use compressed air to clean the threads afterwards and just go gently. A good variety of deep sockets, extensions, wobble extensions and universals goes a long ways here, especially if you have a turbo to deal with.

Good luck,

Mac.

P.S. before I get SH&% for it, Both my trucks run only Motorcraft ZD-9s now the other brands were from PO's. I still had to get them out!

mine were all easy, and they were autolites, half of them burned out. of course, 8 new motorcraft plugs went back in, and after nearly 2 years are still running strong

I would recommend a 1/4 inch ratchet and a deep socket, there are only a few glow plugs that are a little hard to get at. I removed a broken tip autolite gp from my truck when I bought it and it still runs about the same as when I got it

Very good advice. I'd add that the socket should be a 6-pt to minimize the risk of stripping the plug. Some extensions and a u-joint help as well.

Thanks Mac for the Info. While on the subject of GP'S I know the Motorcraft / Beru ( ZD-9's ) are supposed to be top of the line but you did mention Wellman's, are they the wonder plug some people claim? i.e. 100 Degrees Hotter and heat up twice as fast with no tip swelling? Thanks Again.

well, "heat up twice as fast at the tip where it is needed" to me that means swelling tip. i will stick with the motorcraft. they are cheaper, and are what is recommended by ford and international for our engines.

i've heard several times around here about such claims being shown to be the failure of the plugs claiming it. the plug material is only stable to a given temp, and anything above that makes it prone to failure. thats why the motorcraft plug is designed to heat evenly, and doesn't tend to have problems, while these aftermarket plugs have a long reputation for problems.
with motorcraft plugs, my engine start first cylinder up every time, what more can a man ask for

Have a GP with you when you get the socket. Many wont be deep enough. ZD9's at Rock Auto. If one is swelled, I've heard of guys using a small cats paw type of tool and an electric drill. The tip will grind down and permit extraction. I was worried when doing mine, but no issues. All **** plugs too.
