problems with glow pug removal?

Ok boys im gonna change out my glow plugs tomorrow. what can i do to make the change happen without breaking off glow plugs or is it a crap shoot. Ive got a newer 30k mile jasper 7.3 im suspecting glow plug issue cause my wait to start light goes out in about 4 seconds and the engine wont start cold in the morning without a shot of ether. Ive read about making sure the cylinder your working on being on top dead and rotating it as you go in case you break one off i guess the idea being you dont lose it down in the cylinder. Open to suggestions thanks fellas!

If you have motorcraft plugs it will be smooth sailing, any thing else you just have to see. Hopefully it will be a smooth deal. If one doesn't come out after it threads out of the hole stop don't break it off and come back here for help.
There is a tool that takes care of the swollen ones but it is like 80 bucks but warroz can tell you how to build one fairly easy.

Squirt each gp with a liquid wrench/pb blaster stuff at least an hour prior. It will make for better detection of the stuck plugs. Really hoping that it will have beru motorcraft gps in it!!! Don't let it get to you though, chances are you will be done in an hour and you will be off and running. If your problem persists, let us know and we can help you troubleshoot. Make sure to change them all if they aren't the above mentioned plugs!!

Dont wiggle it, hose it with lubricant and try turning it and pulling it straight up. Sometimes soot builds up on them making removal difficult, I had 2 plugs like that. If the plug hasn't been working for awhile it's likely to have a fair amount of soot on it. If it still wont come out, others here will chime in with what they have done.

I have 3 stuck ones and broke one off. Ruined my day for a while. Then I had a stroke of genius. Make sure the piston in that cylinder is near the top...maybe an inch down. Take the exhaust manifold off. Take the valve cover off. Drop the exhaust valve to the cylinder. Punch the broken off part into the cylinder. I took a piece of rubber hose and attached it to my air compressor. I tried blowing down the glow plug hole and shoving the hose up in the exhaust port and just kept pulsing it. I never even saw it come out but I couldnt hear it jiggling around anymore and found it laying on the floor. Only took about 2-3 minutes of trying that. Whole operation only took about 3 hours. Worked amazingly great! Just need to make yourself a little redneck tool out of some steel stock to push the valve spring down to get the keepers out.

I still have to try and get the other two out of the other cylinder bank one day though.

And never use the cheap autolite ones. Burned so many of them up in a matter of weeks. Got some Beru from RockAuto.com and still working 2 years later. They heat up a lot slower and keep red hot for longer. Tested them out in the open to see the comparisons and I was shocked.

replace with motorcraft(Beru brand-made in Germany) Glow plugs and test them via the test light method (at least) every fall, before it starts getting cold.replace as needed.

You can buy a tool to get the stuck and swollen ones out but they are spendy.
Warozz built his own, By cutting a nut in half, that is basically all the tool is.

Thats a pretty good idea, never thought of trying that before.
