Testing Glow Plugs
Hi. I have a start problem and I believe GP. The plugs will not come on and stay but rather the Solenoid clicks and they cycle on off very quickly. So I came up with the bright idea of hooking 12V to them direct and see if the truck starts right up. It did, took right off, so I assumed the timer was not working. Well now all 8 are burnt out. Will hooking 12v to them for 8 seconds burn them out? I assumed that they always got 12v even through the relay. They are Autolite by the way, not sure if that would make a difference.Any help?

If you have an 87 up the controller works off of plug resistance if one is out the glow time is shorter and so on with more than one until it just clicks on. The reason for this is the remaining working plugs are getting all the voltage so the glo time is shorter to try to keep from cooking them. So the answer is yes, but the big problem is the autolights have a tendancy to swell and become hard to get out of the head, more than a few heads have been pulled and motors overhauled because of autolite plugs, so I would get them out of there as fast as I could and hope for the best.

No, Don't take them out as fast as you can ... Take them out very slowly and VERY carefully!
