So, just this afternoon, with no warning signs, my tranny fell flat on its face, first started slipping when shifting into 2nd and 3rd, then no overdrive, then my needle on the stock gauge started climbing... fast I pulled over, let it cool down, then limped her home. Luckily, I had the tranny replaced shortly after I bought the truck a little over a year ago, and the guy who put it in gave me a one year warranty on it so hopefully I'm still covered.
I don't pull much, but do enjoy the occasional race. My question is... how hard are boosted launches on the drivetrain? Cause I would definitely do less of them if that's what ate up my tranny.
Also, no matter what, I am going to upgrade to a 6.0 TC and possibly a BTS valve body if I can scrape together the funds.
I am looking to get an actually tranny temp gauge too, but I already have 3 other gauges on the A-pillar. Where else would y'all suggest putting a tranny gauge?
I am sure the launches don't do the tranny any favors, but I think everybody with a chipped truck does one every once and a while
As far as the tranny gauge they do make a quad pillar pod or one that replaces the top cover on your steering column where your hazard switch is that can hold one or to gauges. Check out autometer.com
So, looks like the guy i got my tranny from isnt going to honor his warranty, so now its time to go tranny shopping. Besides a bts valve body, what sort of upgrades can i get for the 4r100 besides like getting like a fully built one from ATS?
Also torque converter upgrades? Triple disk clutch? The ford HD one? Precision Industries?
Also, I dont tow much, just race. But I do tow a boat or trailer on occasion.
What might all y'all suggest?
If you have the funds, get a built trans from either John Woods, or Brian's Truck Shop and never worry about it again. I say this since you mentioned ATS, which I wouldn't buy at the overprice even cut in half.
Otherwise a decent option seems to be the HD4R100 from Ford. There are just too many horror stories of "local" shops, not getting the build right, ever. Now if you are going to build a trans yourself, then there are some knowledgeable users here than can lead you to some good upgrade parts.
Or go with a JW Trans or one from Brian's Truck Shop
1 year that's crap. I got a 3 year here in town. But wish I would have known about BTS. Pay once and you have a tranny for life. If not that then do an HD
When mine finally gives up the ghost, I plan one making an appointment with Brian. Then god willing, drive it straight up there and get it fixed once and for all.
Boosted launches and hard or slippy shifts: Bad. Assertive shifts and no banana peel effect: Good
Many have A-pillars, I took a different route.
I can't see how you can monitor a gauge way down there without running off the road. I put my most important gauges on the pillar, right in front of my nose. My FP and HPOP are down by the steering wheel, but those I don't need to look at under normal circumstances.
I have always kept temperature gauges up high in front of my nose after one fateful day when I overheated my old 6.9 hauling up a grade in NM. It was sunrise and I could barely see from the glare of the rising sun, never saw my gauge till I suddenly smelled coolant puking. She was pegged for God knows how long. T-stat had stuck closed. Truck was never the same after that, burned oil like a Rambler. (remember Ramblers? Guy pulls into the station in a Rambler and says:" fill up the oil & check the gas please")
The only real drawback to the big pillar pods is the blind spot but you learn to deal with that real fast, and never loan the truck out.
Just had mine rebuilt, it was still ok minus some slipping here and there. I had a reputable builder do it local. He knows its tuned and still give it a 2 yr warranty. I have heard nothing but great things from his customers. He left my JWVB alone and put a double disc TC. Upgraded the clutches and sent me on the way for just shy if 2300.00 I am pleased with it.
If you dont have the cash for a John Woods or BTS trans, a Ford HD4R100 will stand the test of power and time.
I've had an HD4R100 for 6 years/238K and haven't had a problem with it at all. It's towed the heaviest of loads and stood up to the power that I'm putting down. (original trans failed at 127k) The only mods I have are:
