2003 Tranny Issue Help!!!!!
I have a 2003 Ranger 4X4 Extended Cab 4.0 with the 5 speed auto. Recently, I have started to get a shudder in the tranny when it shifts into overdrive at about ¼ to 1/3 throttle. If I’m in the peddle, above 3 grand, it shifts fine. It almost feels like it’s in the converter when it locks up. Don’t know. I’ve got 35k miles on this baby and I’ve got to get her in quick. The biggest problem is my local Ford dealer is absolutely incompetent (Les Jacobs Ford in Cassville Missouri). Has anyone seen any TSB’s even remotely addressing this? I remember seeing a TSB describing similar symptoms a couple of years ago identifying the valve body gasket as the culprit. However, I think it was on the 2000 and 2001 model years and I would have thought this would have been updated in the 03’s. The only way I can get my local dealer to fix anything is if I spoon feed them a TSB along with taking them for a drive. Any info would sure help!

It sounds like your torque converter is your problem here. I have seen this problem before and it was when the torque converter clutch locked up and caused the truck to shudder. I don't know of any tsb's but I hope this helps your with your problem.

UPDATE: I just took it into a different dealer and talked with their tranny guy. We went for a ride and he said this was the THIRD '03 that he's seen do this. He said it starts with a tiny leak in the v/b gasket and then snowballs from there. He said on the last two he did, he ended up completley overhauling the tranny including putting in new converters. In both cases he found excessive wear in the clutch packs and and crap in the converter. He sounds pretty through in his overhauls. It's going in next week to be done.
