So i purchased this truck about 3 months ago and now im having problems putting it in Park. The column shifter is very loose and sloppy. Is there any way to rebuild this? and has anyone else done it before? Thanks in advance
Get a light and lay on your back to look up behind the dash at the shift lever mount that moves the cable to the trans down near the fire wall.
If the shift indicator is out of position only, there is a small white plastic that often breaks up near the dash end.
Move the selector while you watch the mounting points.
Good luck.
The shift handle is hooked to a shift rod. At the rear of the rod is a plate that has 2 screws in it. That plate hooks to the cable that goes down to the transmission. It is somewhat common for those 2 screws to come loose. You can see the plate and get at the screws from under the dash. If they are loose, put a drop of blue locktite on them and tighten them down. The screws will be a gold color....reverse hex IIRC. If it is still sloppy there 2 bushings and two caps that hold the rod in place...those also can crack or just plain wear out. Good Luck! The caps, the inner and outer rod, bushings, are all available if you need to rebuild it. When my rod snapped completely in half I just bought an entire used steering columm for $70.00 and robbed the parts I needed......but Ford has all the rebuild parts in stock.
Its almost like the locking mechanism is wore out. The shifter is really sloppy, like someone has just been slapping it into gear for a long time. The linkage is good, the parts are all fine, except the handle is really sloppy. I have to muscle it into park and alot of times i have to count the catches in the shift points to know for sure im in OD. Its just annoying, doesnt affect the performance at all. I think i will probably just rob a steering column like you did spotty. Thanks for the tips guys
