4R100 Shift Linkage

Is there a way to adjust the linkage? Am having problems shifting into low gear. My shift lever feels loose and sloppy. Any input will be grateful. Thanks

I am having the same problem. I have messed with it now and then but havn't figured it out. There is an adjustable plastic part right on the tranny it has splines and can be moved around to be adjusted to go farther one way or another when you select the gear. But the problem i ran into was that when i could acually go into manual 1 it would no longer let me go into park, and if it did it wouldn't be far enough to let the truck start in park. so i just put it back and havn't messed with it again.

so if any one has ideas i'll be willing to try them too

Marvin, there is a setup in the tech manual, I have done it a while ago, the shifter in a certain gear, weight on the lever, and then adjust..

But this is what I see in some trucks, underneath the dash, on top of steering column is a flange with two torx bolts, They come lose and the shifter gets a huge amount of slack in it, check/tighten the two screws, its hard to reach, if you can look up there and wiggle the shifter and you can see them..

Hope this helps.

Mach1- When I move my shifter I see a gizmo that is plastic allthread with adj. wheel with small steel cable atached to shifter mechanism. Looks to be some sort of adjusting wheel. Dont have access to a tech. manual, couldnt contort myself enough to find flange with torx screws. Will dive in again, thanks for the info, you to Mustang gt350

I Fixed mine the same night i read this post. i went back out and positioned myself that my back was normally where you put your feet while driving so that you can see directly up by the brake peddle.. If you move the shifter you will see a small part just a few inches long and high kinda square/rectangular. That will have 2 torx screws in it. It was that lose that i could unturn it by hand and I took it with my to get the correct size to tighten them to keep from crawing in and out until i got the right one. After you find the screws and tighten them. This is when that plasic adjuster under the dash that you mentioned comes into play. By turning that lil wheel you can move the selector pointer to match up with what gear you are really in. I did stumble onto a pic somone posted of what it looks like up under the dash. If i recal You won't have to pull off the big access panel you want to be looking farther towards the firewall than that will allow you to see through that panel.

Gt350, that is the two torq screws that I was refering to.. I believe you found them, were yours loose?

I have seen these loose on a couple of trucks now, but I have felt the loosness in several trucks I have drove.

After I tighten the screws then I will adjust the shifter meachanism at the trans if needed then I would adjust the pointer if needed, You have to move the shifter through its full range from P to 1 and then center it, then check to see if the shifter position corresponds to the gear selected.

I just put in a new tranmission on my f-250 (01) and I'm hooking up the linkage and it says to put transmission in N and have the shifter in N. Well I forgot which side is the Park side to count from. Anyone help me out?
Thanks.
