Telescoping Mirrors

Anyone running a set of the 2009-2012 telescoping dual element OEM mirrors on their E Van?

Thinking of adding a set to my '03 and curious what they measure (not extended, not folded against the door glass). IOW how far do they stick out?

TIA

They stick out about 16 " ..I would like to install some as well but they are not cheap...the real ones anyway ..the China specials can be had for 100 bucks each......real ones cost 2-3 times that....

This is helpful--thanks!

Yeah I'm onto the Chiwanese stuff---bad thing is I had a brand new set of OEM's found on FleaBay for CHEAP, like $140 for the pair shipped. Sold them thinking I'd never have use which is one of those things that always seems to come back and bite ya!

Hi JWA!

Funny, my girlfriend just got me a set of knockoff/ebay telescoping mirrors for Christmas. They are made in Taiwan.

Here is a picture of it compared to the OEM mirror:

Two things about them:

a) On the right mirror, the wiring harness pins were mixed up... so when I plugged them in, left/right controlled up/down. This was a 5 minute fix, pull the wire connector out of the harness and swap. It's easy to see which ones to swap based on the mirror that came out.

b) The OEM right main mirror is convex while this aftermarket one is flat. I really miss having it convex, I find myself adjusting the position of this mirror much more.

I'm sure the OEM telescoping mirrors wouldn't have this problem... but hey, these were a gift, can't beat free.

If you would still like the actual measurements instead of the picture let me know and I'll walk out to the van.

While the door panels were off I also took the opportunity to install some Rockford Fosgate component speakers (installed them in the back doors too). About $100 for all 4 and they sound great.

Thank you Klinquist----nice Christmas gift, especially from the girlfriend--very thoughtful of her!

I'd greatly appreciate an actual measurement even though it looks like Blageurts 16" might be close----something definite would work wonders.

I've become a bit more practiced on disassembling the Ford factory type connector shells so flipping any wire to be consistent with existing chassis wiring would be a snap. I'll be adding the heated mirror glass to my existing mirrors (like your take offs) and would do the same to the telescoping ones too----I'm in the auto glass biz so the parts are dirt cheap for me.

You can add the convex feature quite easily. If you're not superstitious it only requires breaking out the old and with easily applied adhesive discs pop the new convex mirror in place. (I'd be glad to pass along my discounts on those pieces if interested---PM me if so.)

Anyway the actual dimension when fully retracted would be appreciated.

Thanks again all!

I've got them at just about 15" for these knockoffs.

I told the girlfriend that I needed them after towing this trailer that I rented last month:

The V10 sure does tow like a beast.

That's stellar Klinquist---thanks! PM sent back to you, fixing the problem here on my end with that option normally available.

Nice looking rig too----no doubt that V10 is a beast----are you by chance running one of the Five Star tuning programs?

I am - I opted for performance, economy, and towing tunes (all 87 octane). I've actually never used the performance tune. I switch to towing before I tow (I've only towed 3x so far, but all 3 have been several hundred mile heavy tows) and switch back to economy after.

I never towed without the tune so I can't really comment on how good it is/exactly what it changes. The economy tune is fantastic though - the throttle mapping actually makes the van easier to drive.

I sorta lust after a V10, especially after reading all the great reviews here in the V10 Forum---Mike seems to go the distance in all things related to his products and customer service. Since I never tow anything I don't need that much power and even with a great tune the temptation to plant the right foot would be overwhelming!

Klinquist what's the rear view like with the larger mirrors? Is it that much better than those you just replaced? I have the same type and they're taking a bit of getting used too---much smaller than my '00 pedestal mount fixed type. I love the power tilt feature but the smaller size really, really bugs me!

Well.. right now without the convex right I'd say the visibility on the right side is worse. Left is the same. The actual glass area isn't bigger. I really just need the telescoping mirrors for when I tow - the trailer is wider than the van and I can't see into the lane next to me with the regular mirrors.

So the telescoping feature would be the advantage, not really an increase in mirror area-------that's a bummer!

I've contemplated modifying the existing mirrors to eliminate that mostly useless convex bottom element. Filling that space with an extended mirror plus a NAPA convex stick-on I might regain the rear views I'm missing now.

Odd that I always thought the powered mirrors would be a step up!
