charging question

85 f350 6.9 4speed

I'm having trouble with charging. I recently had to do a little rewiring and I may have messed something up. I'm only getting 12.5v while truck is running. I saw in an older post to put a jumper between the F Post on regulator and pos battery post. When I do that I notice the voltage going up while checking at the battery

Does that mean the alt is wired correctly to charge ?

I'm getting 6.8 volts at the " S " terminal. The old wires were pretty rough going from alt to reg so I replaced all of them and may have left something off. I have brand new alt and reg but I must have done something wrong or forgot something. Is there something coming from the ignition switch that actually turns the reg on ?

I cant help you with the old style other than to suggest a 3g swap.. but seeing as you have a new alt. and regulator, im guessing you will be wanting to keep them.

hey hairy,
I somehow figured it out and its working now. I will have to take some pics and post a diagram because I'm sure it's not 100% right but for now she's holding a steady 14 volts. I'm so burnt out on this wiring I'll have to wait a couple of days to do that

This is my work truck and funds are really low this time of year or I would have taken this thing to someone. Previous owner mutilated the wiring. Plus just spent the last 2 months trying to figure out why starters and solenoids burning up. Turned out to be an ignition switch that only sticks sometimes. Talk about a nightmare to figure out.
