Can the heads be checked while off the engine to see if they are any good? What are you looking for? I heard a story, while the heads are up side down pour some gas over them and look for the gas to either come out exhaust port or intake port.
Ideally you wouldn't want to see any leak through but in a worn engine a little isn't going to hurt anything. When you consider the rings are likely leaking as well. Thats why it's always a bad idea to freshen your heads and then bolt them back on to the old worn bores with leaky rings. It usually results in excessive crank case psi and added oil consumption.
Update, got the heads off today. All but two of the exhaust valves are sucked up in the heads past being flush with surface of head. Dropping them off tommorrow to reworked.
Down in the cylinder walls i see a tint of copper in the bore marks of cylinder. Is this normal or a wear sign?
