2005 Ford Expedition with only 22,500 miles...went to place it in park this morning and the indicator will only go as far as "R". It shifts and functions fine, but is off by one position. Anyone had this problem and know how to repair? Thanks.
Any other ideas? I've removed the lower dash as well as the upper and lower column covers...have good access. The adjuster is not broken and seems to work well throughout it's travel. The little red (or purple) wire that runs through the black tube up to the indicator is intact but has slack on the end that attaches to the shift lever. I've lightly tugged on it to ensure that it's not broken. Pulling on it by hand does move it down in the selector. The problem seems to be that it is not retracting back into the black tube far enough to allow it to reach "P". Adjusting it all the way in and out doesn't solve the problem. I've searched the forums and it seems that most of the remedies suggested are for models prior to my 2005. Help!
You didn't seem interested in years prior to 05. My 04 which is very likely the same as yours uses a spring to return the indicator to the left (it is driven to the right by the shift lever). In my particular case the spring broke which prevented the needle from returning to home.

Thanks...that would make sense. Can you guide me a little more. Where is it located, how to get to it, etc?
I had the same problem with my '06. i bought it from Carmax and had them fix it, along with a couple of other squwaks, within the 30 day fix anything window. The problem resurfaced around 6 months later and saw the thread that alloro mentions. Mine had slack and I adjusted it but I seem to remember that I found that the cable had slipped off of a wheel between the point in the photo and the indicator. I also shot some lubricant into the cable.
