Does anyone know the procedure for re-aligning the shift selector pointer? When in Park, the pointer shows "R" etc. Thanks in advance. (This is a 1998 Expedition.)
hi i just re alignd mine you have to lay on the floor and look up there is a white pice of plastic with a wheel and you can adjust it there. mine was broken in half so i removed it and glued it with super glue and it works great.
The pointer is controlled by a thin cable. Try taking the slack out of the cable by turning the adjusting wheel. If that is not enough to properly adjust the shift indicator, a simple fix is to take up additional slack in the cable with a plastic cable tie.
This is what the adjustment for the shift indicator looks like, these are easily broken so if it's broken that can mess your indicator up. If it is broken you can get a new one at the dealer, and it's pretty easy to replace.
Thanks for the picture and advice, mine is broken as well, I'll order a new one today.
To access it you'll also need to pull the instrument cluster, here's instructions on how to do that. Expedition While you got the cluster out you might as well look at the solder joints for the odometer and see if you might have potential for the odometer blackout problem and give those a quick going over with a soldering iron. You can find out more about that here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...lem-fixed.html And, while you're at it you can replace any bulbs you might have burned out in the cluster or just replace them all anyway as a preventive measure. It takes five #194 bulbs.

FYI - This only applies to those with a digital odometer. For those with the rolling numbers style odometer, you need not do this.
OK, Thank you This is broken for certain. The plastic part that is white. Also, indeed if I pul on it just a bit, I can watch it go right into Park on my indicator. Well, hopefully the minor slack (bushings on the tube) can wait. It's been a long week. I appreciate everyone being here. Literally saves my sanity.
