Damn! I miss Elk hunting. Haven't done it since 1984, in Wyoming.
It's a good time as long as there is a place left to go. One reason we are making some minor modifications to our long time elk hunt pattern.
We have a couple of Timber Companies that are buying up a lot of Coast Range and then effectively shutting off public access. There are now vast tracts of land that are for all intents and purposes inaccessible. They even have control of the access roads so you can't get to BLM and USFS land in some areas.
Just about all of the mountains that I have hunted since I was a kid are now shut off, unless you want to hike 9 miles up 6 to 10% grades just to get to where we want to start hiking and hunting. Not feasible and even if it was, they won't let you camp up there.

We usually went up as far as we could with the trucks, then headed up to our base camp on horse back. That's the only way to go!!

That is what we are kind of looking at for the future. We've discussed taking them up to the top and pitching a base camp. Opens up a whole host of other problems, but that may be what we are going to have to do. Most of my back or high country base camp equipment is getting as old as the hills as are our mountain-trail smart horses.
Catch everyone in about 5 days. I am on my way to another great "wilderness" adventure. My hunting partner is assuring me he has an elk tied up to a tree waiting for us!
Stay safe all!
