I removed my nerf bars and replaced them with a set of these Ford F250 550 SD Crew Cab 1999 2012 Factory Style Running Boards Step Bars | eBay
Why you might ask ? It's not that I don't like the looks of the nerf bars, I really do, but I drive on dirt roads and the nerf bars get packed with mud, it gets thrown up on the doors, and mud gets thrown up in-between the door and the threshold making it a real pain to try to keep clean. I thought about getting different mud flaps but the only way I could see them doing any good is if they were dragging on the ground. Here's some photos of my install.
The first photo is the mud accumulation on the nerf bars, and doors I was referring to, this is one of the cleaner times.
Photos of the mud accumulation inside the doors front and back doors (I didn't clean it before changing the running boards).
Here's a photo of the new running boards.

A good idea. I thought about moving my nerfs up, but accumulating debris will likely cause conflicts with the door bottoms. Your solution seems like a good approach.

I had a 2002 Ranger and it had the black power-coated bars
and I was thinking that I would like to have the black bars
back on this truck. I would also like to replace the chrome
mirrors with the black ones and even paint the grill black.
I was thinking that a satin black would look nice.
