The other day I went to a local Ford Parts yard to get a tailgate for my 74 F100 Styleside and when I was there the guy told me that a 67-72 Tailgate would fit and the body lines would be very close (I guess that Close is a Relative term). Well being I dont know the bodylines on these old fords like I do the older chevys I didnt know the Difference. Well I got it home to find out there is a 2 inch difference from the lower body line on the 67-72 to the one one the 73-78 Fords. I hope this info will keep others from making the same mistake as I made. It wasn't such a big deal but the place is about a 70 Mile round trip. Then dealing with the Attitude from the Jack-n-ape that owns the Ford Parts yard. I wont make that mistake again...
Are ya sure its a bumpside tail gate & not a older one or maybe a step side tail gate? I've used them on dentsides once or twice without any major gaps. Only thing that gives it away is the tail gate handle of you know what your looking at

1964/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD Styleside tailgate (C4TZ-9940700-A) & 1967/72 Styleside tailgate (C7TZ-9940700-A) interchange. ALL the mounting hardware is the same.
The only difference between 1964/66 & 1967/72 is their appearance. 1964/66 have large FORD block letters, 1967/72 have smaller letters surrounded by a raised ovate scallop line.
1973/79's use a different Styleside tailgate (D3TZ-9940700-A), does not resemble the 1964/72 tailgates. NONE of the mounting hardware is the same as 1964/72, except the scissors.
gpence: There is no way, none .. that a Flareside tailgate will fit a Styleside, totally different in length, appearance and how it mounts. Even a can tell the difference.
Lol. You did read the part where he said he has a 2 inch gap some where right???
And yea I know a STEP side gate won't fit.
I was refering to the 67-72 tail gate vs a 73-79. If you don't know the differance between the bumps & the dents you wouldn't know. They will fit with minor modification
Personally I don't know much about any of the 66 & older cause I don't care for the body stlye so ill trust your BOOK knowledge on the their tail gates.

Parts book knowledge and personal EXPERIENCE / 8' Stylesides: 1965 F100 Standard Cab, 1968 F250 Ranger, 1971 F100 Ranger XLT & 1979 F150 Lariat S/Cab all bought new.
Plus, I've owned 73 other FoMoCo vehicles, all bought used. How many other FTE members have bought this many new Ford vehicles and have owned 85 total? Probably none.
How many other FTE members have 35 years of Ford parts experience (1962/97)? None.
Step side / flare side
Flare side sounds homoriffic
EITHER WAY CALL THEM WHAT YOU WANT WHO CARES THEY ARE UGLY.
I've had the same 77 for 23 years
Bought/built/sold/parted out prolly some where around 600-700 of them over the last 23 years.
And yes I slept through English class because it was BOREING
Lmao. I over paid for the rusty short wide box I have one my truck now. Ended up pitting new sides on it. But well worth the money spent cause it looks so much better & I got to play monster truck with the step side box I had on my truck. Hahaha.
If you lay the tailgate flat with the ford facing upward and measure the tailgate from High point (Body Lines) to high point it measures 14 inches on the 73-79 Styleside Tailgate. If you measure the 67-72 tailgate the same way it only measures 12 inches. Making a 2 inch gap from the bodyline on the 73-79 bed. It looks horrible, the bodyline lines up about 2 inches up on the tail lites instead of below them. I hope this clearifies what I am talking about.
I have a 72, a 73 & two 77's sitting in the shop. I'm measuring tomorrow. Lol
Cant believe I stired up this much crap over a Tailgate... Guess some people have more tollerance to panel and body line alignment than I do, But most people are having fits if its a quarter of an inch off and Im talking about 2 inches off... Oh Well
