It's an auto meter digital pyro. The story goes, my bro works for John Deere and they got a used tractor come in and it had this installed. I'm going to try sticking a thermometer in the hole and see if it reads the same.
I'm not sure what kind of thermometer you have that you think will work. Remember the temps can reach over a 1100° F or more if you're pulling hard.
How is the probe hooked to the gauge? did you have to extend the wires?
It's a probe type one that goes up to 200 that we used to tell the temp in water. I just kept it at idle. I concluded that when the engine was at a cold idle with the fast idle solenoid kicked in, the thermometer read 170, where as the pyro read 90. I'm thinking I need a new probe.
i have a 86 with a 6.9 that i put a turbo on left the pump alone she did really good but my temp never comes off cold till its hot out with the ac on but at idle my egt are about 200 and when i get into her about 1050 now i trued up my pump and she still runs the same temps but now she pegs a 15 lbs boost gauge and has way more get up and go but i only truned it up an 1/8 of a turn if that help any
I'm thinking a new probe is what's the issue. Once I can get some new weather stripping and get it to stop leaking water, I'll get a new probe. Just had the windshield replaced yesterday.(Apparently the original) I can't even get it to go close to 300 deg. Also it doesn't climb very fast either.

Make sure the end of the probe is at least 1/2 way into the manifold, theyre very sensitive about that. If thats not the problem, i would do the thermocouple like you say.
I didn't cut it. My bro who's done this before helped me out. Also, the probe is about 2/3 down in the manifold. Today, before I started it up, it said 2deg. It wasn't even 40. It was definitely way off compared the the thermometer test.
I have the same gauge, Im willing to bet the above... My truck used to idle at 290*, let alone run there, there is no way you are accelerating anywhere at all with 290* EGT's...
Id find another Pyro, and see what you get, my money is that you have a screwed up gauge/probe...
Here's some more info. I just hauled 40 hay bales yesterday. I guessed at about 1 ton on the truck. Lugging that load, I topped the gauge at 330. That ain't right at all.
